Perform technical duties associated with the delivery of pharmaceutical services, including, but not limited to: medication distribution and inventory management, sterile and non-sterile compounding, medication reconciliation, cross-functional proficiency, technical expertise, and communication skills. In addition, other duties within the scope of practice, as dictated by departmental need, may be required.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Supports and maintains regular review of medication systems, automated dispensing machine (Pyxis, CII Safe), code carts, Kitcheck, Pharmogistics, Accuprint, OR replenishment, etc., and restocks in an appropriate/timely manner
  • 2. Ensure proper medication movement through rotation of stock based on expiration and usage patterns
  • 3. Remove expired medications or soon-to-be-expiring medications from inventory distribution (carousel, automated dispensing cabinets) as per departmental guidelines
  • 4. Properly receive medications from wholesale and replenish pharmacy stock accurately
  • 5. Prepare sterile and non-sterile compounding products in a safe manner consistent with current standards of practice and current hospital policy and procedure
  • 6. Appropriately complete any cleanroom standards and documentation, per departmental guidelines
  • 7. Perform necessary mathematical calculations (utilizing pharmacy preparation technology) and drug product manipulation, dilution, or compounding to accurately prepare/label unit dose oral solids/liquids/injectable according to policy and regulatory standards
  • 8. Improve medication safety by assisting pharmacists to collect up-to-date prior-to-admission medication lists for patients being admitted to the hospital
  • 9. Utilize all available resources (W-10, pharmacy fill history, Surescripts data, documentation in care everywhere, family) to obtain the best possible medication list
  • 10. Update and clarify allergy information in the patient?s electronic health record
  • 11. Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the department/unit
  • 12. Remains adaptable to using basic office equipment and pharmaceutical devices to support the job functions
  • 13. Familiar with and able to perform basic functions of specialty technician assignments (OR/Anesthesia, Purchasing/Narcotic, etc.)
  • 14. Assures adequate documentation and knowledge of Pharmacy/Hospital Policies and Procedures to assure compliance with the joint commission and regulatory standards under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist
  • 15. Demonstrate proficiency and mastery of various technologies utilized in the provision of pharmaceutical care, including, but not limited to electronic medical record (EMR), automated dispensing system (ADS), Inventory Management software, carousel, Packaging software, Sterile Product Pharmacy Workflow Manager, Barcode Labeling programs, radio-frequency identification (RFID) Technology
  • 16. Communicates problems to the pharmacist including any special or technical problems related to patient care
  • 17. Meets performance expectations for Customer Service, Teamwork, Resource Utilization, and Staff and Self Development as outlined in performance review

Qualifications

EDUCATION

High School diploma or equivalent required. College degree desirable.

EXPERIENCE

Previous hospital experience as a Pharmacy Technician preferred. Community/retail pharmacy technician experience or academic training/experience in health related fields also considered.

LICENSURE

Registration with the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection is required by completion of probationary period and active Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or equivalent certification is required on or within 1 year of, date of hire.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Weekend availability (position typically covers every other weekend). Good communication skills with other healthcare professionals and team members. Ability to effectively work with computer and technology equipment, including the ability to perform basic troubleshooting related to said technology.
