Overview
The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, which encompasses an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey. These include planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Plumber Steamfitter I for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). Under the direction of the Supervisor, Maintenance and Construction, performs a variety of maintenance repairs and installation/replacement of plumbing systems and fixtures including: supply systems, DWV system, plumbing, heating and seam fixtures/equipment. Assists in the work direction of other mechanics, trades helpers and mechanics of other skilled trades.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Operates, maintains, repairs and installs, including but not limited to: pipe systems, plumbing fixtures, heating fixtures, steam fixtures, regulators valves and various system elements/appliances.
  • Responds to plumbing trouble calls and requests within the facilities, using hand tools, power tools, analyzing equipment and testing instruments.
  • Performs routine maintenance, preventive maintenance and inspections on plumbing systems equipment and related equipment/systems. Ancillary equipment and support systems are inclusive of, but not limited to: exchangers, regulators, coils, fluid/gas piping, strainers, operating valves and medical air/gas systems.
  • Installs, repairs and/or maintains water, gas, oil, waste disposal and high-pressure steam and high-temperature hot water. Installs, repairs and performs preventive maintenance on the above, as well as other plumbing systems/equipment including furnaces, heat exchanges and pumping systems.
  • Prepares, maintains and submits to the Supervisor, Maintenance and Construction requisitions for material, work orders, required records an reports relating to plumbing equipment/systems.
  • Maintains daily time sheets and information pertaining to work performed and time spent.
  • Prepares or works from sketches, plans, specifications, in accordance with plumbing standards.
  • Analyzes situations requiring the modification or repair of facility equipment/systems and recommendations for same.
  • Performs pipe and fitting insulation and labeling.
  • Assist in the work direction of other mechanics, facility staff, trades helpers, and/or other skilled trades, as needed.
  • Understands and adheres to Rutgers' compliance standards as they appear in RBHS's Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience

  • Technical school diploma or an equivalent level of knowledge plus five (5) years of experience in the operation, maintenance and installation of plumbing systems/equipment, in an educational, industrial or health care setting.


Certifications/Licenses

  • Valid Driver's License is required.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Sound knowledge of blue print and schematic reading is required, as is through knowledge of all applicable (local, state and national) codes.
Preferred Qualifications

  • New Jersey Black Seal Engineer's License is preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Physical Demands: Ability to perform physical labor without restrictions, including lifting equipment in excess of fifty (50) pounds, performing work on roofs, scaffolds and ladders.

Work Environment: The position may require work in the following environmental condition; wet or humid conditions (non-weather), work near mechanical moving parts, in high, precarious places, among fumes and airborne particles, in outdoor weather conditions and near vibrations up to 2/3 of the time; with toxic or caustic chemicals, in extreme hot or cold conditions, at risk of electrical shock and of radiation less then 1/3 of the time. Moderate noise conditions are typical for the work environment for this job. The position requires close, distance and color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception as well as the ability to adjust focus.
