A Medical Technologist associate or trainee must obtain at least 3 months of training/experience in each high complexity specialty/subspecialty in which they will perform testing. Experience may be obtained concurrently in multiple departments or in single department blocks; you are free to choose based on what works best for you. Once the individual is trained and deemed competent, they may perform testing semi-independently but must have on-site access to a supervisor at all times. After successful completion of training, they are eligible to obtain an MLS license. Anyone with a bachelor's degree in biology or chemistry qualifies for a trainee license; this may include any subset of those concentrations, such as microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, etc. Additionally, those with a minimum number of college credits (as described below) is eligible for a trainee license for a subsequent MLT license. All education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Please be aware that the CLIA personnel regulations are being updated with an effective date of 12/28/2024. I have attached a presentation that quickly outlines these changes for reference. * Minimum 60 college credits with either: 24 hours of laboratory technology/science courses, or 24 hours of biology, chemistry, or laboratory technology/science courses in the following distribution: 6 hours biology 6 hours chemistry 12 hours in additional biology, chemistry, or lab courses |
