Normal Minimum Requirements:
* High School Diploma or equivalent
* Possess a valid, up-to-date driver's license
* Be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
* Mechanical background and aptitude for repairing and performing maintenance on cars, trucks, and other associated equipment
* Ability to perform work in a safe and productive manner with fellow workers and customers
* Must have verbal and written communication skills
* Ability to follow instructions
* Physically able to bend, stoop, and lift for extended periods of time

There will be a three-part testing procedure required for this position. The first step is a written exam followed by a practical assessment and a behavioral based interview. Each step of the process must be passed in order to progress to the next step. We are providing an outline to prepare for the three-part testing procedure. The outline is designed to maximize test results by centralizing study times in the areas listed below:

Technical Skills Testing

Knowledge of the following:

  • 12v Battery and Charging Systems
  • Hydraulic Brakes
  • Preventative Maintenance and Diagnostics
  • Tires and Suspension
  • Automotive A/C Systems


Practical Assessment Outline

Knowledge of the following:



  • Change Tire
  • Replace Battery
  • Diagnosis of basic electrical systems
  • Fluid Checks


Behavioral Based Interview

The interview is a behavioral based interview incorporating Tucson Electric Power Core Competencies. In this process, we believe that past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior and more recent behavior is a better predictor of future behavior than older behavior, and that long-standing trends are better predictors of behavior than isolated incidents. We therefore have patterned the questions during the interview to solicit behavior patterns that indicate with high predictability whether the candidate can perform the job as required. This type of interview is different from those that you may have taken in the past.

Position Description:

This classification is an entry level classification that performs all the basic duties and less skilled operating and maintenance tasks in connection with Fleet Services operations. This employee must possess the ability to learn the required duties and the physical coordination necessary to use tools and equipment.

Position-Related Responsibilities:



  • Keeps company management aware of mechanical repair problems as they occur.
  • Assisting technician mechanics in performing technical activities.
  • Maintains an organized neat and safe vehicle repair bay.
  • Driving of Tractor/Trailers and/or Trucks for purposes of test drives and/or the return of vehicles to the various Unisource division facilities.
  • Repairs or replaces malfunctioning parts and systems such as brake pads, belts, and other mechanical parts on vehicles up to a F550/5500.
  • Test drives vehicle to confirm safe and proper operation.
  • Performs tests on specific parts and systems to ensure proper function.
  • Identifies mechanical problems either visually or with computer diagnostic equipment.
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance including oil changes and tune-ups on small equipment up to a F 550/5500 medium duty vehicle.
  • Perform tire repairs and replacements up to a 19.5 tire.
  • Perform mechanical and electrical trouble shooting and repair of equipment.
  • Perform New vehicle check in's and prepare old vehicles for auction.
  • Assist parts person and order correct parts.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Perform cleanup and similar work necessary for building maintenance and care of equipment.
  • Perform assigned work in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with Company practices and procedures.
  • This position may provide services to affiliates of the Company subject to the UNS Energy Code of Conduct and the related Policies and Procedures.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



  • Complete OJT training with Automotive Serviceman A's and B's for required progression checklist.
  • Must pass training requirements to advance to Serviceman B within 2 years, Automotive Serviceman C's will be eligible after 1 year and Automotive Serviceman B written test must be passed to progress.
  • Become familiar with the basic skills inherent in the classification in which they are aligned.
  • Must be able to work an 8-hour rotating shift schedule and overtime.
  • Able to work in an industrial environment including inclement weather.
  • Possess the ability to learn the required duties and the physical coordination necessary to use tools and equipment associated with their work area.
  • Have basic understanding and comply with all TEP safety rules and regulations.
  • Must demonstrate aptitude and familiarity with the principles of electricity, mechanics, and physics, as related to the operation and maintenance of equipment and vehicles in the Fleet Department
  • Maintain high level of awareness and responsibility for environmental considerations that impact them, their jobs, and the company to the level of their knowledge, training, and experience.
  • Effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid Arizona CDL license with necessary endorsements, within 6 months.
  • Have mechanical aptitude with an interest in learning automotive work.
  • Maintain a high level of awareness and responsibility for environmental considerations that impact them, their jobs, and the Company to the level of their knowledge, training, and experience.

Pay Rate: 23.31/hr
