Job Description

Are you looking for a challenging position to develop new applications in quantum technology impacting the fields of high-performance computing, sensors, materials, and energy systems NNL is looking for engineers with experience in this exciting new field to help leverage this technology to push the envelope for next-generation nuclear reactor design.

This position will require you to work closely with academic and laboratory researchers to assess technical developments in the field and direct the research goals to develop and mature promising technologies. You will also be expected to interface with internal stakeholders to explore high-impact opportunities to map new technologies to existing system and end-user applications.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 4 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 2 years of relevant experience; or PhD degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field; or Currently or previously NPE qualified; or CTE/ACRS and 1 year EOOW qualified in the Nuclear Operations Program; or Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and 1 year as SRE.
  • Proficiency or familiarity in some aspect of Quantum Information Science (including Quantum Computing, Quantum Sensing, Quantum Materials, Quantum Communication, or Quantum Networking).

Preferred Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across multiple disciplines of science and engineering.
  • Strong ability to distill and communicate complex technical topics to diverse audiences in written, verbal, and multimedia formats.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Intellectually curious, creative, and able to proactively identify potential stakeholders and impacts of technology in this rapidly developing field.
  • Strong interest in nuclear energy, materials science, or scientific computing are preferred.

Pay Range
$83,600.00 - $130,700.00 annually
Salary information provided is a general guide line only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. We rely on the dedication and innovation of our nearly 8000 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel.
