Ability to use tools with care and store properly.

N.C. driver's license preferred; not required.

Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
Laborer assists and performs work involving physical labor that includes grounds maintenance and upkeep, moving and hauling and setting up for special events. Grounds maintenance and upkeep includes cutting grass, edging walks, blowing, planting, pruning, weeding, policing, sanitation (trash), leaf removal, snow-ice removal, as well as moving and hauling, event set ups and breakdowns. Position operates hand tools and small engine equipment (i.e. weed eaters, blowers, push mowers, edgers, hedge trimmers). Position is not required to operate large motorized grounds equipment (i.e., riding mowers/zero turns, walk-behind, tractors, dump truck, trailers). The incumbent must understand oral and written instructions of work assignments and carry out task; duties must be performed mindful of work safety techniques. The incumbent also performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Physical Plant is responsible for providing services relative to buildings and grounds maintenance, utilities,transportation, trash removal, central receiving, recycling, and moving and hauling. In addition, the Physical Plant has expanding responsibilities that include providing support services for the instruction and research programs to achieve the University's mission, goals and objectives. The Physical Plant maintains, improves and expands all campus buildings, campus image and educational opportunities for all people. More specifically, the functions involve energy conservation, building renovation/repair, occupational safety and health, event planning, motor pool and equipment maintenance/repair, motor fleet and housekeeping services to 40 academic buildings, 15 research buildings, 15 residence halls, 19 farm buildings and 21 support facilities. Moreover, the Grounds Department provides a maintenance program for the University's 200 acre campus, 800 acre farm, and other local off-campus properties, natural landscape features and the athletic complex. Services include sanitation, grounds care and maintenance, landscaping and moving/hauling.
Work Hours Works an eight (8) hour period between 6am-3pm on Monday through Friday; works overtime and some weekends. REQUIRED to work during adverse weather (snow, ice, other emergencies) and special events.
Is this position eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement, consistent with university and state policies. On-site (Employees are primarily in the office and/or have a critical job requirement that requires dedicated office space on-site)

Duties
Works as a tradesman's helper cleaning campus of debris and trash (policing campus by walking/gator), cleaning walks, curbs, trimming/edging/blowing/cutting lawns/weeding, assists with planting trees, shrubs, sod-seeds, and flowers, mulching, watering, snow-ice removal (adverse weather clean-up and damage control), moving-hauling furniture or other materials to include chemicals and gases manually or otherwise.

Sets up and breaks down for special events.

Performs maintenance of grounds.

Assists with installing fences and sign posts

Repairs sinkhole and pothole.

Operates hand held grounds tools and small engine equipment.

Reports during adverse weather (snow, ice or other emergencies) as directed.
