Job Description - Power Production Specialist Trainee

Starting pay for this position is $27.72 per hour.

Normal Minimum Requirements



  • Must have three (3) years ofutility or relevant industrial experience
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Must possess a valid up-to-date driver's license


  • Ability to perform basic math calculations
  • Must have physical ability to climb stairs and ladders, bend, stoop and lift for extended periods of time
  • Shift work required

There will be a three-part testing procedure required for this position. The first step is a timed Edison Electric Institute (EEI) aptitude test battery or proof of full completion of the EEI testing, followed by a written technical skills test and a technical/behavioral based interview. Each step of the process must be passed in order to progress to the next step.

We are providing a study outline to prepare for the aptitude testing, written testing, and the technical/behavioral based interview. The outline is designed to maximize test results by centralizing study time in the areas listed below:

Technical/Behavioral Based Interview

The interview is a technical/behavioral based interview incorporating technical knowledge, skills, and abilities, with our Core Competencies. In this process, we believe that past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior and behavior that is more recent is a better predictor of future behavior than older behavior, and that long-standing trends are better predictors of behavior than isolated incidents. We therefore have patterned the questions during the interview to solicit behavior patterns that indicate with high predictability whether the candidate can perform the job as required and ascertain an understanding of the applicant's technical knowledge. This type of interview is different from those that you may have taken in the past.

Position Description:

The Power Production Specialist Trainee (Probationary) is a classification for the purpose of providing employee training. Employee must be able to obtain the PPS II position within 1 year. The employee is expected to perform all the basic and less skilled duties in connection with operations and maintenance performed by personnel in the section to which he/she is assigned. This employee must possess the ability to learn the required duties and the physical coordination necessary to perform his/her duties. The training involves strict examining and satisfactory progress is required.

This employee's work may be directed by supervisors or other employees in a higher classification. He/she may be required to perform work as an individual. The work which is performed as an individual will be in conformance with training and safe work practices.

Position-Related Responsibilities:

Assist personnel in the department they are assigned to complete daily tasks

Perform work alone within the conformance of training and safe work practices

Able to take directions and have a willingness to learn

Perform assigned work in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with Company practices and procedures

Able to safely perform work within their training and ability

Performs other duties as assigned

Must pass training required to advance to Power Production Specialist II

This position may provide services to affiliates of the Company subject to the UNS Energy Code of Conduct and the related Policies and Procedures.

Requires the ability to obtain and maintain CIP certification.

This is a safety sensitive position.

Support and communicate Operational Excellence goals, objectives, vision and values.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Become familiar with the basic skills inherent in the classification in which they are aligned

Must be able to work a 12 hour rotating shift schedule.

Able to work overtime as needed.

Able to work in an industrial environment.

Possess the ability to learn the required duties and the physical coordination necessary to use tools and equipment associated with his/her work area

Have basic understanding and comply with all TEP safety rules and regulations

Must demonstrate aptitude and familiarity with the principles of electricity, mechanics and physics, as related to the operation and maintenance of equipment used in the generation of electrical energy

Maintain high level of awareness and responsibility for environmental considerations that impact them, their jobs and the company to the level of their knowledge, training and experience.

Effectively communicate both orally and in writing

Possess a valid driver's license

Work harmoniously with fellow workers and customers

All employees are expected and required to adhere to the Company Code of Ethics and Principles of Conduct.

* Training curriculums may vary based on business needs. Training Progress Reviews will be held with the employee and the employee will have an opportunity to comment with regard to training issues.
