Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Adams School of Dentistry Division of Craniofacial and Surgical Care provides a diverse approach to treatment for patients with craniofacial or oral and maxillofacial conditions, including those with multiple or complex oral health problems. The Orthodontics discipline focuses on the treatment of irregularities of the teeth, jaws, and bite relationship in children and adults.
Position Summary
The Department Manager in the Department of Orthodontics provides daily programmatic and operational management, is a member of the management team, and reports directly to the Chair of Orthodontics. This position serves as the right hand to the Chair of the Department and has fiscal authority in the absence of the Chair. The Department of Orthodontics is an academic, clinical, and research unit consisting of 18 residents, approximately 5 permanent faculty, 15 adjunct faculty, and 14 staff members.

The Department Manager manages activities in the Orthodontic Department administrative office, the Graduate and Predoctoral Orthodontic academic programs, the Graduate Orthodontic Clinic, and the Orthodontic Dental Faculty Practice. The Department Manager manages operating budgets and procurement activity for the department; assists with budget planning and policy development/interpretation; and reviews and enhances procedures/systems that impact the department, providing status reports regularly as scheduled and, outside of protocol, as needed. This position directly supervises the Clinic Supervisor, Lab Supervisor, and Dental Assistant Supervisor and, thereby, is second-level supervisor for all departmental administrative and clinical staff. This position works with subordinate supervisors and in collaboration with the Chair to resolve problems or questions regarding work processes, policies, organization, and/or methods. The Department Manager also assesses operational needs with regard to technology, telecommunication, and facilities management and communicates with a wide variety of internal staff and external agencies.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Mid-career with Masters and 1-2 yrs experience; or Bachelors and 2-4 yrs experience
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Successful applicants will demonstrate a positive, highly professional and customer-oriented focus in the workplace. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills are required. Strong computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint are required. In addition, successful applicants must demonstrate the following:

Ability to perform a broad range of business functions; ability to conduct financial management, budget analysis, and forecasting for a complex department funded by a variety of dynamic and multidimensional funding sources (clinics, endowments, expendable foundation funds, state); ability to supervise and manage administrative and clinical staff and supervisors to ensure compliance with recruitment, selection, training, and performance management policies and procedures; ability to recommend resolution of disciplinary matters; ability to lead employee growth and development and, in partnership with the HR office, to develop a long term staffing plan for a diverse and dynamic workforce; ability to develop short and long term goals, objectives and strategic plans that support the department's mission and functions; ability to assess and resolve unprecedented problems; ability to understand, distill and communicate complex information both orally and in written reports that make impact on operations and/or policies; ability to interpret policies and procedures and develop specific departmental practices; ability to communicate, negotiate, and work with faculty, students, staff, patients and other departments and organizations; ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, to negotiate to achieve successful results, and to thrive in a fast-paced environment to deliver high-level customer service; must demonstrate strong professionalism and excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.

Knowledge of appropriate business practices and procedures. Ability to manage and improve business processes and operations by ensuring continuity, integration of the Department of Ortho's policies and procedures with the ASOD's mission and strategic plan. Ability to develop long- and short-term goals and objectives that support the business functions. Knowledge of financial management, personnel administration/management, purchasing, inventory control, facilities coordination/planning, and information technology needs assessment.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Administrative management experience in a clinical setting (medical or dental); experience with Business Systems Analysis or other evidence of systems development and improvement, especially in a clinical setting.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to work on the telephone and at a computer, using a keyboard and monitor(s), for prolonged periods. Must be able to tolerate office lighting sufficient to allow others to comfortably read documents and interact in a meeting setting. With or without reasonable accommodation.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
