Primary Purpose: Provide governance, oversight and leadership over the ET&D capital portfolio of projects. Drive discussions and provides recommendations and strategy to align business units across the electric portfolio to the capital plan. Responsible for leveraging prioritization framework, resource forecasts to drive recommendations and gain consensus across business units. Influence peers to align with produced strategies. Provides direction to a group of individuals, portfolio managers, workload forecasting manager, project managers, and/or contracted resources by overseeing their efforts to ultimately provide a high level of service to clients, stakeholders, and management. Ensures effective collaboration with internal departments, stakeholders, cross-functional groups, and vendors to define requirements, assess alternatives, and present solutions to business challenges. Interface with and provide regular updates to executive leadership to drive positive business outcomes in alignment with strategic corporate goals.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for development and implementation of portfolio management including but not included to: monitoring, reporting, prioritizing, and optimizing, portfolio to ensure company financial earnings and operational targets are met. Drive decision making and ensure buy-in across ET&D capital project teams. Prepare portfolio level budget forecasts, analyze trends, and evaluate opportunities for balancing and re-optimizing the portfolio. Provide direction and support to project teams, contractors, and consultants.
- Establish long-term vision for portfolio management, workload forecasting and capital planning and execution. Align financial planning with company vision and goals to ensure projects prioritized and executed by business units are accomplishing company objectives.
- Drive key decision-making through improved processes, system automation, and summarized reporting/dashboards. Provide timely support on executive, regulatory, and other data requests. Act as a subject matter expert on cross-functional improvement initiatives where needed. Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities through innovation and collaboration.
- Manage workforce planning for contracted resources. Balance current resources with new requests and future needs to maintain appropriate level of support across the division. Drive accountability to ensure established deliverables are met and high quality of services are provided to project teams. Manage existing vendor contracts in alignment with company policies, and proactively identify additional contracting needs to achieve established goals. Provide support to negotiate contracts changes as required.
- Provide leadership, mentoring, and coaching to teams of internal employees. Oversee, direct, and monitor team members in the successful completion of their work through guidance, training, and support. Responsible for the success of teams through oversight of meeting project goals. Speaks to the progress and impact of the work performed by teams, and ensures organizational goals are considered and met through the success of projects completed by teams. Actively supports professional development of team members.
- Respond to data requests from senior management and regulatory filings and interfacing with external agencies. Interface with and provide regular updates to executive leadership to drive positive business outcomes in alignment with strategic corporate goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties.
Hybrid Schedule:
- Although the schedule may vary, typically this will allow the employee to work onsite three days per week and remotely on the remaining workdays.
- Must reside in Southern California or be willing to relocate upon hire.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree Engineering, Business or related or equivalent training and experience.
- 10 + years experience related to utility project design, portfolio management, engineering, operations, project management, and/or construction management.
- 2+ years experience leading or directly managing employees including performance management, training and development.
- Experience successfully managing large projects and knowledge of best business practices related to the execution of capital projects.
- Knowledge of and experience with budgets and development of cost management strategies. Financial acumen adequate to understand expenditures and financial results/impacts of projects and basic utility accounting.
- Demonstrated ability to review complex problems and propose innovative solutions.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills, equally comfortable communicating with individuals or groups of engineers, executives, and internal and external stakeholders; strong interpersonal skills with ability to persuade and influence to achieve consensus.
- Demonstrate knowledge of project management theories and concepts.
- Skills in leadership and team building, organizing, planning, coordinating, and delegating to effectively manage and develop staff and achieve organizational goals.
- Occasional travel may be required between various/multiple SDG&E locations in order to facilitate and attend meetings as related to core functions of role.
Preferred Qualifications:
- An MBA or advanced degree
- Understanding of complex capital projects, business practices, and knowledge of the regulatory process, typical design and construction requirements, inter-department dependencies and stakeholders.
- Project management certification.
