Title: Controller

Location: La Jolla - Hybrid/Onsite 3 days

Salary:$165-190k + Bonus + Carried Interest

Description: This role offers the opportunity to work closely with the firm's CFO and oversee key financial and accounting activities in a dynamic environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting or finance, along with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced, team-oriented setting. This position involves managing financial reporting, investment closings, data management, and supervising internal accounting functions while acting as the primary liaison with external stakeholders.

Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Investment Closings:
  • Prepare and coordinate quarterly financial reports for investors, including updates on new investments.
  • Coordinate financing closings, including legal document reviews, investment committee approvals, and wire transfers.
  • Attend investment committee meetings to discuss follow-ons and new investments.
  • Prepare annual valuation memos for over 150 active portfolio companies to support audits.
Interfacing with External Stakeholders:
  • Collaborate with valuation consultants to complete portfolio company valuations.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for auditors, coordinating data sharing and addressing valuation-related questions.
  • Regularly communicate with portfolio company executives and finance teams to provide support and resources.
Data Management & Oversight:
  • Track new investments and follow-on investments, maintaining accurate databases and working with the fund administrator.
  • Update industry databases, such as Pitchbook and Crunchbase, with quarterly activity.
  • Oversee day-to-day activities of the accounting team, including managing the Accounting Manager and Staff Accountant in India.
  • Ensure timely collection of quarterly financials from portfolio companies.
  • Manage payroll, HR paperwork, and 401(k) contributions for employees.
Additional CFO Support:
  • Review financing documentation for new and follow-on investments.
  • Conduct benchmarking analyses of the fund's performance against industry peers.
  • Assist in preparing fundraising due diligence materials and internal Excel-based reports.
  • Communicate with portfolio companies on financial expectations and participate in update calls as needed.
  • Prepare PowerPoint presentations and underlying data for the firm's Annual Meeting and Advisory Board meetings.
  • Support tax, audit, and LP activities, including tax schedule preparation and audit confirmations.

Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in public accounting, venture capital, or partnership environments.
  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting or Finance (preferred).
  • CPA license (preferred).

  • the individual's skill sets, experience and training;
  • licensure and certification requirements;

With that said, as required by local law, Vaco believes that the following salary range referenced above reasonably estimates the base compensation for an individual hired into this position in geographies that require salary range disclosure. The individual may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
