Summary: As the Marketing and Communications Intern, you will be involved in a wide variety of projects and tasks that support the Communications team's efforts and make a positive impact on departmental goals. You will further strengthen existing skills within the realm of communications and also build new ones. This internship's work is highly collaborative and requires someone who is confident, open-minded, adaptable, strategic, organized, and eager to learn and collaborate with others. You should be proactive in your approach to work, have a strong sense of responsibility, and be enthusiastic about gaining experience in a real-world work environment.
This is a full-time (40 hours/week) hybrid internship that will report to our Headquarters office in Chevy Chase, MD two days per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays), and work remotely three days per week (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays). Please note:If selected for an opportunity, interns are responsible for securing their own housing for the duration of the internship (12 weeks during the summer months).

This internship will be compensated at a rate of $17.50-$19.00/hour for undergraduate students and $21.00-$24.00/hour for graduate students.
What you'll do:
Assist with campaign planning efforts in collaboration with the Marketing Communications Manager and other members of the team. Create and send marketing emails and report post-send results. Assist with creating slide decks, presentations, and reports for Communications team meetings. Upload content to the Digital Asset Management system, ensuring all assets adhere to HHMI metadata standards and requirements. Have the opportunity to learn how to use-or strengthen your skills using-a variety of enterprise-level communications tools such as: SharePoint (Intranet), Hootsuite (social media management), Drupal (HHMI.org), and Asana. Use data (Google Analytics, Search Console, Mailchimp) to identify evergreen content to re-promote via social media, email, and on the HHMI.org website. Research relevant topics, news, and trends within the world of biomedical science to support ongoing communications efforts. Pitch and create content related to these trends while learning how to translate and express content for various audiences. Assist with various larger projects, developments, initiatives, and campaigns in collaboration with the Internal Communications, Visual and Social Media, Leadership Communications, and Janelia Research Campus Communications sub-teams.
What you bring:
Current enrollment in a bachelor's degree program majoring in communications, marketing, business, English/writing, or a closely related area of study. Graduate students are welcome and encouraged to apply. Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, SharePoint, etc.) is required. Familiarity with Slack or a similar IM platform is required. Familiarity with Asana, Mailchimp, Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suite, and Drupal (or similar platforms and systems, respectively) would be a plus. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong initiative, self-motivation, and capacity for creative problem-solving. Strong organizational, teamwork, analytical, and time management skills. Attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy. Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
