This position maintains mechanical, electrical and building equipment in water treatment plants and pump stations and operates and maintains low pressure and hot water boilers in Water facilities.
Work Location: This position currently works on-site only.
The City of Minneapolis does not sponsor applicants for work visas.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
-
- Operate, maintain, clean, and, as qualified, repair low-pressure and hot water heating boilers in Water Division facilities.
- Inspect, lubricate, operate, and maintain overhead cranes, gantries, hoists, and chain systems.
- Inspect, lubricate, and maintain valves and actuators, pumps, motors, conveyors, compressors, filter presses, chemical feeders, and other equipment used in water treatment plants and pump stations.
- Inspect elevators.
- Operate and maintain motorized material handling equipment, including forklifts, scissor lifts, and track mobiles.
- Use computerized maintenance management system for maintaining time and materials records of preventative and demand maintenance requests.
- Communicate and coordinate with other trades and contractors regarding repairs necessary based on inspection results.
- Positively engage in training both as a trainee and mentor co-workers in areas of responsibility
- Read meters and gauges and record results.
- Operate and maintain underground utility infrastructure including pumps, valves, manholes, and pipelines.
- If qualified and assigned, fill in for Plant Service Worker or Water Treatment Operator for the repair of membrane modules, offloading of water treatment chemicals, cleaning of treatment process tankage, and basic plant maintenance activities.
- Work in a team environment with little or no supervision.
Working Conditions: Requires heavy lifting and working both indoors, outdoors and in confined spaces; exposure to heights, lime, dirt, loud noises, heat stress and small print.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Education: To be eligible for this position, candidates must have High School Diploma or equivalent and completed one of the following:
- A 1-year certificate or diploma in Industrial Electro-Mechanical Technology, Industrial Building Engineering and Maintenance, or a related field (MUST ATTACH PROOF OF YOUR CERTIFICATE OR DIPLOMA TO YOUR APPLICATION).
- Alternatively, proof of completing an equivalent amount of coursework in a relevant program (MUST ATTACH PROOF OF TRANSCRIPTS OF YOUR COURSEWORK IN THE RELEVANT PROGRAM TO YOUR APPLICATION).
Minimum Experience:
No previous experience required if minimum education requirements are met.
Three years of related experience in maintaining water plant systems, mechanical systems, rotating machinery, hydraulics, and/or low-pressure boilers can be accepted as a substitute for the 1-year certificate or diploma qualification
Equivalency:
An equivalent combination of education and highly related experience in a similar environment may be considered.
Licenses/Certifications:
Minnesota Boiler License: Special Engineer at time of hire and must obtain and maintain Second Class Engineer, Grade C within 18 months of hire.
Possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted Driver's License
HAZWOPER Operations Level certification within 12 months of hire.
Minnesota Water Supply Operator Class D Certificate within 12 months of hire.
Associated Boards of Certification (ABC) Plant Maintenance Technologist Class I within 18 months of hire.
Selection Process The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience 100%. It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score 70% on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process. Background Check The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position.
Drug and Alcohol Testing All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position. Medical Exam After a conditional job offer, candidates will be required to pass a medical examination which includes a physical screening. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire one month after it has been established. Interview Selection The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list. If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate's education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.

- Knowledge of OSHA safety rules: lock-out/tag-out, confined space, energy control (Arc Flash), Safety Data Sheets
- Possess basic mechanical skills:
- Read and understand blueprints and technical drawings.
- Comprehend and apply mechanical data
- Perform mechanical math
- Use and care for power and hand tools appropriately
- Ability to write and speak clearly in communicating with the public and fellow employees
- Knowledge of and ability to use computers, software, smartphones, and other modern tools in performing the work.
- Working knowledge of fire extinguisher types and usage.
- Ability to plan and prioritize work.
- Ability to lift and maneuver heavy objects.
- Ability to pass fit test and perform work wearing full face respirator.
