Job Announcement

The Department of Information Technology (DIT) Radio Services Center (RSC) supports all County Public Safety and general County agencies, as well as the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) wireless communications technologies to include Land Mobile Radio (LMR), Enhanced Push-to-Talk (ePTT), and mobile data environments.

  • Maintains critical wireless voice, video, and data networks and equipment in both mobile and fixed environments for Fairfax County radio user agencies.
  • Participates in projects for transition to and provides hands on support for implementing Push-to- Talk technologies on smart phone devices.
  • Uses broadband administrative and management application tools for implementing and doing moves, adds & changes supporting push to talk users.
  • Using appropriate tools, RF and electronic test equipment and system software to install, program, troubleshoot, repair and maintain wireless communications systems including broadband push to talk devices, two-way radio, ancillary audio, electrical and wireless equipment.
  • Conducts analysis and troubleshooting of complex public safety digital communication systems that utilize a variety of radio frequency (RF) devices and associated equipment.
  • Keeps track of associated assets and utilizes the radio asset management system and services database.
  • Serves as part of team in Radio Services to support coverage requirements and response to customer agencies' needs 24 by 7.
  • Provides subject matter expertise on wireless and public safety broadband.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Possession of an associate degree in computer science, electrical engineering, electronics, or a related field; plus three years of network and/or telecommunications experience; or a bachelor's degree in such fields; plus one year of experience in network or telecommunications system design, analysis, installation, and troubleshooting.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least five years of hands-on experience in repair and alignment of conventional and P25 trunked mobile and portable radios.
  • At least three years of hands-on experience installing radio, wireless, and data-related equipment in public safety and fleet vehicles.
  • At least two years of experience with Westnet Fire Station Alerting; to include troubleshooting components of the First-In Alerting System as well as other ancillary components within a fire station including, but not limited to: public address system, bunkroom lighting, and RF radios in a fixed environment.
  • Experience using an asset management and service database system.
  • Working knowledge of the principles, practices, terminology and Land Mobile Radio (LMR) system. Working knowledge of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) laws, rules, and regulations and licensing, and other federal directives related to radio and wireless communications systems and equipment for public safety and broadband.
  • Be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, be able to stand, bend, lay on back, climb up into tall vehicles, work in small or cramped spaces, work off of ladders of various heights, be able to correctly discern full spectrum of colors, be able to correctly utilize power and hand tools.
  • Experienced in the reading and interpretation of construction diagrams and plans.
  • Experience in the design and installation of RF and associated equipment in new/renovated commercial building construction.
  • Able to interpret electrical schematics.
  • Have excellent written and oral communications skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Work in tight spaces, discern full spectrum of colors, and use hand tools and equipment. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
