Academic Job Description Administration Cornell AgriTech Senior Extension Associate-Assistant Director of Cornell AgriTech The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University's second largest college. Position Function Under the supervision of the Director of Cornell AgriTech, the Assistant Director of Cornell AgriTech will work with Cornell AgriTech leadership (including the Director, Associate Director, Associate Director of Business Operations, Program Leaders, and the Executive Committee) to advance the mission and vision of the campus. This includes providing project management for major initiatives including agricultural intelligence and robotics, circular agri-economy and farms of the future initiatives. This position will also be responsible for managing the reporting and compliance for Cornell's NYS hemp license. Communicating with local and state-wide stakeholders and assisting in grant writing in support of AgriTech initiatives will be an integral part of the position. Anticipated Division of Time Organizational leadership: 15% Be a key member and representative of Cornell AgriTech's Executive Committee. Provide strategic support for sustainability initiatives, partnerships, and engagements. Serve on appropriate committees and advisory groups to foster strong collaboration and coordination between AgriTech and industry and all local and global stakeholders. Help develop a strong partnership with other units in CALS and across Cornell, in supporting Cornell AgriTech's mission and impact. Management and support of strategic programs and projects: 40% Provide management, technical support and supervision for major sustainable, new technology, and field demonstration projects and programs, including setting up action plans, applying for and managing related grants, conducting reviews of program activities, progresses, and achievements, and documenting successes, impacts, and issues. Examples of project areas include, but are not limited to, circular agri-economy initiatives, farm stormwater runoff management, initiatives supporting farms of the future. Ensure collaboration across disciplines in the area of robotics and ag intelligence. Work with Cornell's Sustainable Campus team to increase sustainability on research farms. Develop and track metrics for measuring progress on strategic plan initiatives. Help organize, as needed, workshops, conferences, and events to advance AgriTech's mission and vision. Manage Reporting and Compliance for Cornell's NYS Hemp License: 15% Work with researchers to collect planting and disposal reports. Compile and submit regular reports to NYS Ag & Markets. Manage NYS license renewal and compliance. Extension/Community Communications/Initiatives: 25% Participate in meetings for the Director, including board and committee meetings of the Cornell Agriculture and Food Technology Park, Station Safety Committee and committee meetings and tours in conflict with the Director and Associate Director's schedule. Participate as needed in community and governmental initiatives and events, including assisting in grant writing for these initiatives. Work with the Director, faculty and other internal and external advisors to identify high priority fund raising opportunities. Support efforts related to the success of the Hudson Valley Laboratory, the Cornell Lake Erie Research and Extension Laboratory (CLEREL) and the Long Island Horticultural Research and Extension Center (LIHREC). Serve as a liaison with City, County and other government agencies. Professional Development: 5% Participate in professional development opportunities, conferences and workshops appropriate to program and personal skill enhancement. Requirements: Required: Master's degree in agriculture, public health, sustainability, business management or related field and six or more years of related work experience (eight or more if the qualifying degree is a master's degree that is non-terminal for the field). Key Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Desired to Perform the Work of this Position: Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to work with diverse audiences in group and one-on-one settings; experience working with agricultural stakeholders. Structured problem-solving approach to complex assignments. Proven organizational and time-management skills. Strong leadership and teamwork skills. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Proficient in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint (can develop high-end presentations, geared toward stakeholders as well as senior leadership). Creativity, energy, motivation and positive enthusiasm. Valid license without restrictions and ability to drive and travel for work. Desired: Experiential education or on-the-job training that covers agriculture and life science, food-climate-environment related businesses. Knowledge and experience in current and emerging issues in plant science, pest management, breeding, digital/data science, robotics, artificial intelligence, food processing, and controlled environmental agriculture.
