The oversight and management of the Biosafety Office and its staff and programs is essential to the operational backbone of the university's research involving biological materials and compliance with the Federal Select Agent Program.

HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL DO

This position will provide oversight and management of the Biosafety Office, staff, and programs. This position will work closely with other safety officers (i.e., chemical, radiation, and environmental), occupational health and safety staff, and high containment (i.e., BSL3 and BSL4) staff.

The essential duties and responsibilities of the Senior Biosafety Officer are the following:



  • Biosafety and Biosecurity:
    Ensures the biological safety program is compliant with all applicable federal, state and local environmental, health, and safety regulations. Develops biosafety and biosecurity policies and procedures for GSU research and instructional laboratories. Monitors staff performance and implements data quality control measures. Provides technical expertise to the IBC, IACUC, and other relevant committees.
  • Select Agent Program Management:
    Provides oversight for the Select Agents and Toxins Program in strict compliance with the Centers for Disease Control and United States Department of Agriculture regulations. Serves as the Institution's Alternate Responsible Official (ARO) or Responsible Official (RO). Develops and implements biosafety, biosecurity, and incident response plans. May assist in planning and implementing emergency drills to ensure preparation for events.
  • Biosafety Protocol Review:
    Reviews and assesses research protocols involving the use of biological material, laboratory operations and facilities and construction/renovation plans for all aspects of biosafety.
  • Biological Waste and Transport:
    Oversees the biological and regulated medical waste programs to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory agencies. Provides oversight of the biological/infectious substance shipping program. Ensures hazardous materials are stored, packaged, labeled, and shipped/transported properly.
  • Occupational Health:
    Develop programs to prevent and manage biological exposures (i.e., Bloodborne Pathogen, Respiratory Protection, Infectious Substances). Responds to incidents or injuries, conducts incident investigations, and conducts laboratory assessments.

Qualifications :

Minimum Requirements:



  • Master's degree in microbiology, Biology, Public Health, or related field and five years of related experience; or a combination of education and related experience.
  • Certification by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (CIH), Board of Certified Safety Professionals (CSP), and/or American Biological Safety Association (CBSP) required.
  • Must be able to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment. Must be able to pass U.S. Department of Justice security clearance.
  • Experience in an academic setting.


Preferred Hiring Qualifications:



  • Certification or ability to become certified for DOT and IATA biological materials shipping within the first 6 months of hire.
  • Training or the ability to complete training in HAZWOPER (40 hours) within the first 6 months of hire.
  • At least 3 years' experience in BSL3 or ABSL3 and/or Select Agent and Toxins program management experience is preferred.
