Position Highlights |
The University of Arizona Health Sciences (UAHS) is seeking a Director, Health Data Science Services (HDSS) to join the Center for Biomedical Informatics & Biostatistics (CB2). The Director of HDSS will report to the CB2 director and will be accountable for defining and delivering systems, policies and processes concerning transport, management, and analysis of data from our clinical partners to support biomedical research. The Director will collaborate with clinical partners, IT professionals, investigators, faculty and trainees to create and develop innovative biomedical data solutions. The Director will serve as a technical expert for health data analysis, transport systems and protocols and as liaison for CB2 for technical connections to our healthcare partners. Duties & Responsibilities |
Leadership:
- Plans and implements University-level biomedical research data architectures and strategies.
- Manages problems involving developing novel solutions to complex problems spanning multiple organizations in regulated environments.
Collaboration:
- Interacts with faculty and technical leaders at UA, other universities, corporations, and governmental entities.
- In collaboration with investigators, develops research strategies for collecting and managing clinical and patient level research data in support of grant applications and/or publication.
- Collaborates with healthcare partner IT and research staff to facilitate data access to support research.
Operations:
- Negotiates, designs, manages, and monitors the UA HIPAA Honest Broker activities.
- Develops UAHS ETL strategy and manages ETL teams related to the availability of clinical data for research.
Management:
- Accountable for planning and evaluating performance, staff training and development, recruitment and may contribute to pay recommendations, subject to policies.
- Coaches and develops staff to enhance functional and leadership skills and expertise.
- Oversees research data analysts to support researchers.
- Develops annual budget recommendations for CB2 related to Honest Broker and clinical data management activities.
Policy and Procedure:
- Recommends, collaboratively develops and implements UAHS policies related to research uses of clinical data.
- Develops, implements, and maintains operational plans, programs and systems impacting UAHS.
- Oversees development and documentations of Standard Operating Procedures related to management of clinical and patient data to support research.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge and expertise in principles, practices and theories of biomedical informatics and data management.
- Knowledge of regulations (e.g. HIPAA) regarding biomedical data.
- Knowledge of EHR data structures and coding systems.
- Ability to adapt and execute UAHS plans and strategies.
- Ability to work effectively in highly diverse cross functional teams.
- Ability to adapt to rapidly changing regulatory and technical environments.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
- Minimum of 9 years of related work experience, including 5 years of managerial experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Formal training in biomedical informatics or comparable data-intensive discipline.
- Experience with and knowledge of current healthcare and research data transport protocols (e.g. FHIR) highly preferred.
- Experience with EHR phenotyping and sub-phenotyping.
- Experience with regulated clinical and/or research data needed.
- Experience in a clinical or biomedical research environment.
- Experience with Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) of large datasets.
- Experience leading a team, project, program, or function.
