Department Background

The Department of Animal Science offers undergraduate and graduate programs on the biology and management of food, laboratoryand companion animal species. Our research programs advance our understanding of animal biology and address local and global issues facing animal industries today. Our goals are to discover and develop new techniques and information to benefit animals, agricultureand human health. Ourinternationally recognized faculty have diverse interests in animal management, breeding, genetics, physiology, nutrition, growth biology and microbiology. The Cornell Raptor Program was established in 1993 to provide Cornell undergraduate students and other community members an opportunity to become involved directly with efforts to promote conservation of birds of prey.

Position Summary

The Cornell Raptor Program (CRP) is a nonprofit academic program at Cornell University charged with promoting education, research, rehabilitation, and propagation of birds of prey. The program's primary focus is to provide education of raptor natural history and conservation to students and the public using non-releasable resident birds of prey. The CRP is seeking a program manager who will work closely with the CRP Director to provide daily oversight of the resident raptors, staff, and volunteers. The CRP Manager is responsible for coordinating and conducting routine husbandry and training of resident birds (hawks, eagles, owls, falcons, and turkey vulture) to serve as education ambassadors. The manager also assists in coordinating and supervising staff and volunteers who are primarily undergraduate students. This position is one of both oversight and hands-on responsibilities related to raptor training, health management, and facility upkeep.

This position may require weekend, variable hours, and holiday shifts. The CRP Manager will work with a passionate and diverse group of volunteers, veterinarians, the program Director, and the CRP Advisory Committee.

The successful candidate will be organized, detail oriented, reliable, and communicative. You will be joining a dynamic team where collaboration thrives and colleagues support one another, creating a positive and inclusive environment that fosters creativity and innovation.

This position is full-time, 40 hours per week appointment located in Ithaca, New York.

This is a one-year and three-month term appointment that is contingent upon available work, funding, and performance.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination
  • Extensive experience in training hawks, eagles, owls, and falcons for educational purposes including knowledge spanning traditional falconry approaches to choice-based behaviors
  • Experience leading and supervising staff and volunteers
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong self-motivation, time management, and organizational skills
  • Possess a willingness to work, grow and evolve in a team environment and possess the skills and ability to work independently
  • Strong computer skills in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and ability to learn new software and management programs
  • Ability to perform general maintenance including aviary cleaning, perch replacement, and basic facility cleaning
  • Must have and maintain and valid and unrestricted NYS driver's license and be cleared to drive for Cornell University business operations
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Assisting in identifying new funding sources, grants, and contracts and participating in proposal writing.
  • Participate in budget and program management, compile year-end data for reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrated skill in understanding of cultural differences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in a related field
  • 3-5 years' experience working with raptors
