Primary Purpose of Department
The Office of University Development's primary purpose is to build philanthropic relationships that engage alumni, donors, students, faculty and the community in supporting the University's mission. These efforts include working closely with the donors, governing boards, alumni, friends, community members, foundations and corporations to increase private giving to the University. The Office of University Development is within the division of University Advancement.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Director of Gift Planning increases the capacity of the Office of Gift Planning by identifying, cultivating, and soliciting planned giving prospects and donors; serving as a resource for all planned giving activities and presentations; administering estate gifts; and managing projects undertaken by the Office of Gift Planning. In addition to planned giving activities, the Director of Gift Planning will assist in major and principal gift solicitations. The Director of Gift Planning will play a key role in the University's campaign and will work together with the Senior Director of Principal and Planned Gifts to manage donor engagement, develop annual operational plans, and oversee programmatic goals.
Summary of Position Responsibilities

  • Be thoroughly knowledgeable on all deferred giving vehicles and regularly update knowledge through professional development. Develop and maintain current understanding of relevant tax, probate, trust and financial/estate planning information and use that knowledge to inform and propose strategies for addressing donors' philanthropic/estate planning objectives.
  • Manage a portfolio of 75-100 individuals capable of making planned giving commitments of $100K+ or outright giving commitments of $35K+.
  • Lead or assist, as appropriate, the development of briefings, proposals, training materials, and presentations needed to promote successful cultivation and solicitation of planned gifts.
  • Work collaboratively and foster a positive relationship and ongoing communication with gift officers and the colleges/units they represent, providing training/training materials and strategy support as needed.
  • Assist in creating a comprehensive strategy and annual operating plans to facilitate the marketing and stewardship of planned gifts, including Bonnie E. Cone Society (legacy society) stewardship initiatives.
  • Prepare or assist with the preparation, as appropriate, of planned giving-specific fundraising-related reports, statistics, and projections.
  • Work closely with legal and financial professionals in designing and executing planned giving instruments.
  • Promote University priorities and image to constituents. Serve as front line staff officer to promote university objectives.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 5+ years of experience in gift planning fundraising

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Legal degree (J.D.) preferred
  • Demonstrated sound judgment, integrity, creativity
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to think strategically
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
  • Proven history of management of a portfolio of prospects
