Job Summary

Reporting to the General Counsel, the Assistant/Associate General Counsel is responsible for providing legal advice and counsel for Drexel University to clients and for legal practice areas as assigned.

Among other areas, the attorney holding this role will provide legal advice and support on matters including civil rights compliance involving discrimination and sexual misconduct (e.g., Title VI, Title IX); disability access and accommodations; student affairs such as misconduct and disciplinary matters, academic integrity, student organizations, and other student affairs-related matters; contract negotiation, review, and interpretation; policy drafting, review, and interpretation; regulatory compliance; nonprofit corporation law; and other areas and duties as assigned.

The attorney holding this position will be expected to both work independently on the matters to which they are assigned and collaboratively with colleagues in the Office of the General Counsel and across the University. The ability to work in a complex educational environment with multiple clients and handle time sensitive assignments is essential.

This is a Hybrid position, required to work from campus approximately twice a week for client and department meetings. The role's title (Assistant or Associate) will be determined at hire, based on the candidate's background and years of experience.

Essential Functions



  • Provide general legal advice to administrators, faculty, and staff on legal matters arising from operations of the University.
  • Provide advice and support to University personnel to prevent and minimize legal liabilities and litigation. Educating and advising clients regarding compliance with applicable polices & procedures.
  • Prepare, review, draft, and negotiate contracts, legal documents, and other transactional work.
  • Assist with the development, communication, interpretation, and revision of institutional procedures and policies.
  • Represent the University before federal, state and local administrative agencies.
  • Participate on institutional bodies and committees as assigned.
  • Prepare and present training materials on legal issues for administrators, faculty, and staff.
  • Handle litigation matters and supervise outside counsel representing the University in litigation or other transactional matters as needed.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


Required Qualifications



  • Minimum of Juris Doctor.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a practicing attorney for Assistant General Counsel role; Minimum of 5 years of experience as a practicing attorney for Associate General Counsel role.
  • Well-developed writing skills, strong analytical, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to coordinate provision of legal services and support to university clients.
  • Experience in a fast-paced environment, working on multiple projects with multiple clients.
  • Experience identifying and resolving complicated and sensitive problems creatively.
  • Clear, demonstrated capability for legal research and analysis.
  • Substantial experience in other commercial contracts and transactions, including the review, negotiation and drafting of relevant agreements and documents.

Additional Information
This position is classified as Exempt. Compensation for the Assistant General Counsel role falls under Grade O, salary range $108,330 - $135,620 per year; Compensation for the Associate General Counsel role falls under Grade P, salary range $129,850 - $194,770 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
