Position Purpose
The Tax Manager is responsible for Institutional compliance with applicable federal and state income tax laws and regulations, providing leadership and guidance to other member of Finance to ensure completeness and accuracy of all tax filings for Dartmouth College and its subsidiaries. The Tax Manager is the primary point of contact for working with external regulatory agencies and tax advisors. The Tax Manager also provides instruction to Alumni classes and clubs regarding their tax reporting obligations.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Minimum of 10 years relevant tax reporting and tax accounting experience with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, financial management, or another applicable field.
  • Experience managing complex financial and tax matters, including matters requiring a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Thorough knowledge of computer systems and research applications associated with Federal, state and local tax laws, regulations and filing procedures.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal and state tax reporting requirements and deadlines for complex not-for-profit organizations, preferably higher education.
  • Knowledge of investment partnership tax reporting, including UBI reporting on Form K-1.
  • Strong experience with a variety of tax operations and ability to drive process improvements.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking abilities.
  • Strong ability to utilize project management skills to organize and prioritize work, including work of other team members.
  • Ability to work independently as well as the ability to work well with colleagues and team members.
  • Ability to work under pressure of time constraints, manage competing priorities and changes in schedules and priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Highly proficient with computer applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Commitment to diversity; ability to work effectively with all constituencies in a diverse institution.

Preferred Qualifications


  • CPA.
  • Experience in higher education or with higher education tax practices.

Key Accountabilities


Description
Tax Compliance

  • Responsible for managing the collection, preparation of information, and timely and accurate filing of all federal and state informational and income tax returns for Dartmouth College and affiliated organizations. Prepare supporting workpapers and review workpapers prepared by others. Ensure timely payment of amounts due.
  • Review approximately 450 investment partnership K-1s for UBI implications, excise tax implications, federal reporting requirements relating to foreign investment vehicles, and state UBI reporting requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Office of General Counsel and the President's Office to gather information from Trustees and Senior Leaders necessary to file accurate returns.
  • Prepare briefing materials and review annual Form 990 filing with senior leaders in Finance, Office of General Counsel, President's Office, Investment Office, and Office of Communications.
  • Responsible for identifying and implementing software to support federal and state tax filings.
  • Implement procedures and maintain documentation to manage all tax-related filing requirements for federal returns and approximately 30 state returns.
  • Respond to inquiries from the IRS and state agencies.

Management and Outreach

  • Prepare and present instructional materials to Alumni Class and Club Treasurers regarding their federal Form 990 filing requirements. Serves as a resource for questions.
  • Collaborate with Director of Financial Reporting to plan work distribution and timing for financial reporting and endowment/investment accounting staff involved in tax return preparation.
  • Maintain relationship with external tax advisors.
  • Represent Dartmouth in industry groups.
  • Recommend improvements in internal control related to tax compliance matters and implement a review process to ensure tax compliance controls are functioning as intended.
  • Lead and participate in outreach and training efforts to support campus awareness of potential tax related matters and planning considerations.

Tax Research

  • Collaborate with colleagues across the institution to identify, research, and recommend solutions to tax compliance and reporting matters.
  • Analyze and evaluate tax implications of transactions; advise on options for compliance.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory tax law developments. Advise Finance and institutional leadership on changes affecting Dartmouth.
  • Responsible for identifying and implementing software to support tax research.
