Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree preferred.
  • Minimum 8-10 years' experience in Information Technology management preferred.

Position Summary
This position is responsible for managing the overall operations, planning, and development of information and technology services for the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. The mission of the Office of Information Technology ( OIT) is to foster and support an effective information technology environment in service to those who contribute to and/or benefit from the overall mission, vision, and operation of the University of Georgia, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences ( CAES). The overall human resource and operating budget for this service unit is $1.4 million, with a staff of over 30 professional-level employees. This team is comprised of IT Managers, Web Developers, Application Developers, Systems Administrators, Client Services Specialists, and Helpdesk Professionals. Personnel are physically based in five locations in the state of Georgia (Athens, Griffin, Tifton, Calhoun, and Statesboro). The organization's support domain includes CAES clientele at the University of Georgia Athens and Griffin campuses, County Extension Offices, Research & Education Centers, and departmental farms.

The OIT Executive Director reports to the CAES Senior Director of Finance & Administration and is a key member of the CAES Finance and Administration senior management team. Responsibilities include: strategic and tactical planning, budget management, project management, strategic planning, resource management, vendor relationship management, developing a culture of customer service, acting as main liaison with Tifton Sr. IT Manager, and the supervision and development of IT professionals and leaders. The OIT Executive Director must be highly motivated, skilled and experienced in managing a complex and diverse technology-based service unit, solutions-driven and focused on exceptional customer care.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field of study.
  • Experience in Information Technology management. Supervisory experience in a large and complex organization.
  • Knowledge of system administration, information security, project management, and user help desk support models.
  • Working knowledge of technology infrastructure, including related software and hardware, as applied in a large and organizationally diverse unit.
  • Able to produce and maintain complex reports and records.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, customer service, planning, and decision-making skills. Effective verbal and written skills, including conflict resolution and the ability to conduct in-person training.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with faculty, staff, and the public.
  • Experience with HR data systems, Microsoft Office Suite, Smartsheet, recruiting, training development, and presentations.

Information Technology Management

  • Direct and coordinate the delivery of Information Technology Services, including, but not limited to:

    • Central database and web services
    • Network and communications services
    • Client and desktop support services
    • Instructional and virtual communications services, technology awareness and education services



  • Promote, foster, and monitor exceptional customer care.
  • Coordinate and manage all aspects of IT as needed, including, but not limited to the following functional areas: information systems architecture, user experience and web services, application analysis and development, systems administration, cloud services management, network support services, digital delivery systems, desktop support services, instructional support services, and information security.
  • Foster and maintain effective strategic working relationships, internal and external, to the College and University.
  • Management of strategic partnerships; participation in the development of technology and website policies; and the coordination and implementation of technology and website initiatives.

  • Effectively recruit, develop, evaluate, supervise, and retain highly skilled, highly motivated, and customer-focused IT personnel. Ensure College strategic vision and initiatives are effectively communicated to impact the accomplishment of their roles.
  • Develop and implement effective employee retention, professional development, and leadership succession strategies for the CAES IT workforce.
  • Consistently evaluate organizational structure to ensure that it is appropriate to meet departmental, college, and university IT needs.
  • Assure the continued development and strengthening of the IT workforce through deliberate and thoughtful recruitment of qualified and motivated employees, constructive evaluation, performance monitoring, coaching, mentoring, and professional development.

Strategic and Financial Management

  • Assess and analyze CAES operational and programmatic needs and requirements.
  • Lead strategic planning and project management initiatives and processes.
  • Actively align IT skill sets, resources, services, and non-personal assets to CAES strategic direction, goals, and objectives.
  • Work with senior management and clientele to develop and communicate a strategic vision for IT that is broadly embraced within the College.
  • Develop and manage departmental budget and resources.
  • Manage budget for all classroom technology upgrades and Student Technology Fees.
  • Practice disciplined stewardship of CAES IT assets and budgets.

Liaison with key college, University, and outside groups

  • Serve as primary liaison with UGA Enterprise Information Technology Services (EITS) and University System of Georgia IT services. Effectively represent CAES interests to these groups in an effort to ensure that important and unique CAES IT needs are well understood.
  • Serve as primary contact with outside vendors and consultants. Manage these relationships to ensure fiscal efficiency and alignment with College strategic goals.
  • Inform and advise the Director of CAES Finance and Administration, Administrative Council, Department/Unit Heads and other senior leadership on relevant communications, website, and technology matters.
  • Effectively communicate IT goals, needs, and service expectations with a diverse array of internal college constituencies, including students, administrators, faculty, and staff.
  • Represent CAES OIT within external regional and national associations such as the Southern Region Program Leadership Network (SR-PLN).
  • Manage relationships and project strategies with vendors or consultants concerning IT and web-related initiatives.
