Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume): Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in technical field (e.g. Computer Science, Engineering, Computational Science, etc.). Five (5) years of full-time relevant professional experience which may include a combination of in the fields of IT systems, security management, export controls, contracts, regulatory compliance, or business process development. Experience with and understanding of the federal and other regulations related to federally funded research and development. General familiarity with regulatory schemes, governing information, dissemination, and IT security standards, and identifying the minimum controls necessary to meet the applicable requirements. Demonstrated knowledge in IT and cybersecurity risk management practices. Ability to bridge the communication gap between IT security professionals, administrators, and researchers (end-users). Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Experience in higher education, healthcare, or federal contracting organizations. Project management experience. Experience with national and/or international security frameworks (ex., NIST Special Publications, ISO 27001, etc.). Basic knowledge of contract review, interpretation, and negotiation practices. Relevant professional certifications (ex., CISSP, PMP, etc.). Brief Description of Duties: The Research Security Manager will report to the Director of Research Security in the Office of Research Security. This position will support the key aspects of Stony Brook University's (SBU) Research Security Program with an emphasis on information security and protection of intellectual property and will collaborate closely with the Chief Research Information Officer and Chief Information Security Officers. This position will be responsible for the creation and monitoring of physical and IT (end-user) security plans and data management plans for SBU's grant and contract portfolio with regulatory or contractually mandated security requirements, information sharing, and management plans. This position will support the Director of Research Security in the development of policies and processes to implement SBU's Research Security Program. This position will work collaboratively with faculty, department staff, and the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) to find the most practical solutions to meet the required IT security standards (i.e., research award/contract) and/or the protection of sponsor's intellectual property. This position will work with the Office of Sponsored Programs in the identification and negotiation of security requirements in incoming contracts (awards). In addition to creation and oversight of IT and physical security plans, this position will support all functions of the Office of Research Security including export control, travel security, documentation, record keeping, and coordinating with the other units involved in SBU's Research Security Program. May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff. Based on the duties of the position, superior written and verbal communication skills are essential. The successful incumbent will also have excellent leadership, organizational and problem-solving skills, and ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues and leadership. The Research Security Manager will possess the ability to organize and lead projects that required integration of efforts across many internal and external entities including faculty, staff and students in the research arena. * Program Management: Work with the other offices in the Office of the Vice-President for Research (i.e., Sponsored Programs, Research Compliance, Intellectual Property Partners) in the identification and negotiation of IT security requirements in contracts/agreements (e.g., Sponsored Research Agreements, Non-Disclosure Agreements, Material Transfer Agreements, Data-Use Agreements). In collaboration with the Division of Information Technology develop physical and IT (end-user) security plans and data management plans for SBU's grant and contract portfolio with regulatory or contractually mandated security requirements, information sharing, and management plans. Document and finalize security and data management plans. Provide overview and training to faculty and lab staff on security and data management plan requirements. Collaborate with research groups, IT teams, and campus units to troubleshoot and improve workflows. Create detailed monitoring plans outlining the scope, objectives, and procedures for monitoring, including testing methodologies and sample sizes for the SBU research portfolio. Manage a comprehensive IT monitoring program for research and/or data that has specified research security requirements. * Policy and Program Development: Assist the Director of Research Security with the creation and maintenance of policies, processes, and programs directly related to research security. Assist the Director of Research Security to develop, implement, and promote a restricted research program that builds the confidence, capability, and quality of SBU to conduct a restricted research program, permitting SBU's restricted research portfolio. Develop and lead training sessions, workshops, and create documentation. * Other duties as assigned. Special Notes: The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation.
