APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: The Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) in the College of Health and Human Development (CHHD) at Penn State University seeks applicants for a term, non-tenure track open-rank Teaching Professor position (48-week appointment). We seek candidates who are strong generalists with a breadth of expertise enabling them to teach across our HDFS undergraduate curriculum (including, but not limited to, developmental foundations and family science courses, applied skills courses, and advanced topics courses). The ideal candidate will have a strong record of experience teaching web-based offerings at the undergraduate level. Preferred candidates will have experience working with both traditional and non-traditional learners from diverse backgrounds and be confident and competent in guiding students with diverse career goals. Candidates should have superior writing skills, including specific experience developing undergraduate curricula for web-based delivery. Preference will be given to candidates with experience collaborating with instructional design specialists and with deep knowledge of pedagogy, best practices, and design standards as they relate to online learning. Additionally, specific competencies critical to success include excellent interpersonal and professional verbal and written communication skills; strong organizational skills; a team-oriented, collaborative approach to work; ability to build strong professional relationships with students and colleagues; and demonstrated expertise relevant to supporting undergraduate student career and professional skill development. The appointment will be within the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Penn State's University Park (UP) campus; however, primary responsibilities will be web-based - including instruction and curriculum development for the HDFS online offerings through Penn State's World Campus, as well as web-instruction offered through the UP campus. The typical instructional load is 3-4 courses/sections per semester (in Fall / Spring) and two courses/sections in Summer (12 week) semesters. The semester load, however, is always determined in balance with other assignments related to strategic efforts to enhance and maintain strong HDFS undergraduate programming (e.g., the development of new courses, and designing new approaches to existing courses). All HDFS faculty appointments also include regular service to the department (e.g., serving on committees). The position requires a doctoral degree in Human Development and Family Studies, Psychology, or a related field (e.g., Education, Social Work). Penn State is committed to and accountable for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all of its forms. We embrace individual uniqueness, foster a culture of inclusive excellence that supports both broad and specific diversity initiatives, leverage the educational and institutional benefits of diversity, and engage all individuals to help them thrive. We value inclusive excellence as a core strength and an essential element of our public service mission. Our campuses are located on the original homelands of the Erie, Haudenosaunee (Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk, and Tuscarora), Lenape (Delaware Nation, Delaware Tribe, Stockbridge-Munsee), Monongahela, Shawnee (Absentee, Eastern, and Oklahoma), Susquehannock, and Wahzhazhe (Osage) Nations. As a land grant institution, we acknowledge and honor the traditional caretakers of these lands and strive to understand and model their responsible stewardship. We also acknowledge the longer history of these lands and our place in that history. This is a term faculty appointment that is funded for one year from the date of hire, with an excellent possibility of re-funding. When applying, please upload a cover letter, a CV, a brief statement of teaching philosophy/interest, and a list of contact information for three professional references. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. For questions, please contact Shannon Corkery, Ph.D., at sac301@psu.edu.
