S&ME is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Staff Engineer to become part of our Construction Services and Geotechnical team in Duluth, Georgia. This role offers a fantastic chance for individuals eager to gain practical experience and enhance their engineering and project management abilities by collaborating with experienced professionals on construction materials testing assignments. What You Will Do:

As a Staff Engineer, you will be pivotal in guaranteeing the quality and safety of construction projects by evaluating and confirming the properties and quality of materials used. Under the guidance of a Licensed Engineer, you will manage field explorations, log soil samples, perform engineering calculations/design, prepare proposals and reports, and support projects and clients.



  • Testing construction materials: Perform tests and observe special inspections of materials such as soil, concrete, asphalt, and other relevant substances to ensure they meet project specifications and industry standards.
  • Reviewing plans and specifications: Verify that construction plans and specifications align with project goals before conducting field observations.
  • Documenting field activities: Record detailed observations and test results, using Metafield or other management systems daily for efficient data management and coordination.
  • Preparing reports and proposals: Assist in drafting reports and proposals for small projects, ensuring thorough and accurate assessments and documentation.
  • Maintaining communication: Engage with management, contractors, and clients to ensure project transparency and provide regular progress updates.
  • Design and analysis: Offer preliminary engineering recommendations and solutions by reviewing and analyzing design plans and data to ensure optimal project outcomes.



Who You Are:



  • You have a Bachelor's degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Management, or a similar technical field
  • You have a minimum of 2 years of professional experience
  • You have your Engineer in Training (EIT) license or on track to obtain
  • You have effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language
  • You have basic math, reading, and writing skills
  • You have at least three (3) or more active certifications:

    • American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician
    • International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils





Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as:



  • Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially up to 12 hours a day
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Maneuvering field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground around active construction sites
