SUMMARY

Responsible for the receipt, handling and processing of laboratory samples in a timely manner. They will assist with training and supporting overall laboratory order processing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES includes the following:

  • Opens patient sample boxes and retrieves specimen for testing
  • Accurately and precisely perform specimen and patient data entry, labeling of samples, document imaging and data review in the Laboratory Information System.
  • Prepares and aliquot samples for requested testing
  • Quarantines unknown shipments or samples in unacceptable conditions
  • Accurately sorts and files laboratory specimens and documents for storage
  • Retrieves samples out of inventory based on sample requests and maintain accuracy of inventory by location
  • Proper disposal and cold storage of samples to ensure compliance with laboratory standards
  • May be responsible for accessioning proficiency and blind testing of samples
  • Required to follow all safety procedures, policies and precautions
  • Responds to freezer alarms and coordinate transfer of contents as required
  • Performs new hire and annual competency training, including training checklists with Lab Order Processing Manager
  • Collaborate with client services and technical representatives in processing issues and RFI tickets
  • Writes or updates laboratory documents such as Standard Operating Procedures and departmental forms
  • Organizes daily work schedule to meet processing deadlines
  • Recommends process improvements to improve department workflow
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Position generally requires a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 3-5 years related experience or Associates degree with 2 years related experience. Preferred is a Bachelors degree. Knowledge of ICD10 codes and 1-2 years Data entry experience. Experience working in a CLIA/CAP regulated environment preferred.

LANGUAGE/COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively communicate in a one on one and small group situation. Ability to understand basic medical terminology.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in fast paced environment under standardized situations. Ability to understand and comply with all applicable laboratory regulated guidelines.
