Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Education, Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Student Development, or related field
  • Minimum of two years of P-12 teaching or other related educational experience
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills with a focus on accuracy and detail in tracking and recordkeeping
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders
  • Proficiency in common office software (e.g., Google Workspace) including data entry and management software
  • Be willing to work evenings and weekends when necessary; typical workload may include one (1) evening event per week and one to two (1-2) weekends per semester.

License/Certification Required

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience teaching in public schools or related educational experience
  • Experience in program development, implementation, and assessment in an educational setting
  • In-depth understanding of student development theories and best practices in student engagement
  • Experience working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and external stakeholders to enhance student retention efforts
  • Experience working with Residential Living Community programs
  • Experience with event planning, coordination and implementation
  • Experience with group travel planning, coordination and implementation

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The James Center for Student Success and Advising ( JCSSA) resides in the Reich College of Education ( RCOE) and provides professional education opportunities for current students, as well as overall support and general advising for all Teacher Education majors. The James Center supports the Appalachian Community of Education Scholars ( ACES), North Carolina Teaching Fellows, Education Peer Ambassadors, and Appalachian Educators Club.
The Coordinator of ACES will communicate and collaborate across the college and the university related to ACES preservice teacher education programming and support. This position, in collaboration with the Coordinator of Teaching Fellows and Student Engagement, will work directly with ACES and Teaching Fellows planning and programming and engage with Teacher Education students to ensure they have the resources and support they require to be successful in their collegiate experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Partner with the Director of the James Center for Student Success and Advising ( JCSSA) to assist in the support and coordination of the Appalachian Community of Education Scholars ( ACES) Program. Responsibilities will focus on student recruitment, retention, support, persistence, and completion of the ACES program.
ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Accurately maintain all program records of ACES, including tracking program requirements and participation.
  • Create and maintain program resources; including manuals, websites, newsletters, and forms.
  • Work closely with the Director of the James Center to provide leadership to the ACES Advisory Council and oversight of the programming budget.



PROGRAMMING

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate the enrichment programming specific to ACES (e.g., First Year Community Retreat, Enrichment Trips, Cohort Meetings, Professional Development, Social Events, Mentor Committee, etc.) in collaboration with the Director of the James Center.
  • Collaborate with the Coordinator of Teaching Fellows in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of shared programming to provide intentional opportunities to Teaching Fellows and ACES cohorts.
  • Create and maintain program resources, including manuals, websites, newsletters, and forms.
  • Participate in ACES programming activities, events, retreats, and travel that will include occasional nights and weekends.
  • Provide outreach opportunities for ACES to work with various school groups who come to campus/Reich College of Education.


RECRUITMENT

  • Serve as the ACES Residential Learning Community (RLC) Leadership Chair and coordinate with University Housing to facilitate housing needs and secure housing for ACES first and second years.
  • Work closely with the Associate Director of Admissions for Teacher Education and the RCOE Coordinator of Recruitment, Retention, and Scholarships to plan and host significant recruitment events (i.e., Open House and Teacher Education Preview Day) and to select scholarship recipients and award ACES offers.
  • Market and promote the ACES program and its offerings through social media and direct communications with students, parents, and the university community.

RETENTION AND STUDENT SUPPORT

  • Provide career-related counseling, information, and support to students
  • Provide coaching to students to identify and overcome barriers to degree completion.
  • Provide students with information regarding various campus offices that support students. Refer students appropriately when needed.
  • Work closely with the Graduate Assistant for Student Engagement in effectively supporting student engagement efforts.
  • Teach CI 3531 - Seminar on Teacher Leadership as needed.

EFFECTIVE COLLABORATION AS A MEMBER OF THE JCSSA STAFF

  • Understand the James Center's vision, mission, and goals; work toward their realization through supporting James Center programming and operations; and collaborate with all James Center staff on the continuous improvement of our efforts.
  • Provide staff representation at University outreach events.
  • Lead orientation sessions on teacher education admission and licensure requirements.

The Coordinator of ACES serves on committees and assignments as requested by College and Center leadership.
