Description of the Department or Unit |
The Department of Mathematical Sciences promotes intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and a culture of learning in a supportive environment that encourages faculty to actively engage in teaching, scholarship, and service in the pursuit of student excellence. The department consists of 31 tenured or tenure track faculty as well as more than 30 full-time and part-time non-tenure track faculty. The department offers a B.S. degree in actuarial science, a B.S. degree in mathematics with concentrations in statistics, secondary education, business, life sciences, physical sciences, and computation and a B.A. degree in mathematics. The department also offers an M.A. with concentrations in either college teaching or secondary education. Over the last ten years, the department has graduated 55 undergraduate and 10 graduate majors each year on average.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities |
The successful candidate will have a full-time 9-month teaching load of 12 credit hours of classes per semester (fall and spring) and providing service
essential to the functioning of the department, such as serving on committees.

ABD Description |
ABD with reduction in rank and salary:
ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.
No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since
ABD will not meet the minimum requirements,
ABD will not be considered. |

- Discuss the applicant's approach to teaching and reect on past student evaluations and/or peer reviews of teaching.
- Include a discussion of experience, interest, or condence in teaching with different modes of teaching and technologies in the classroom. Should include a list of all courses you have taught and how many times (1,2,3,4,5,6+), as well as specic Appalachian classes that the applicant would feel condent in teaching.
- Outline potential interests in contributing to the department community through outreach, committee work, and other services.
