Our goal is to build strong teams that, in turn, build strong communities. Knife River is looking for an experienced Heavy Diesel Mechanic to work for our Cheyenne, WY division.
This position will require you to be able to work both independently and as a team player. Working in extreme weather conditions should be expected. Job Summary:
- Responsible for performing maintenance and repairs of a significant nature on all types of equipment and/or assisting with repairs/improvements/maintenance of equipment to assure it is in safe working condition. These repairs include but are not limited to: hydraulic repair, brake work, engines, air compressors, transmissions, electrical repairs and welding. Safely operate equipment, standard & specialty tools welders, hoists and other lifting devices, etc. on a daily basis
- Troubleshooting equipment maintenance problems to properly diagnose components to determine method and extent of repair necessary. Read, interpret, analyze and apply information in technical manuals and schematics.
- Anticipate needed parts & supplies, disassemble equipment & parts, fabricate parts when needed and reassemble equipment & parts
- Communicate effectively (verbal, listening, written). Frequent contact and communication with others within and outside the company. Self-motivated, team-player with excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work independently or in a team setting; ability to maintain positive customer relations & act courteous/respectful of others.
**Work will be performed in the local shop as well as on jobsites. CDL Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Over 2 years up to and including 4 years from post high school, work, military, institutional or vocational environment in mechanic field or maintaining road construction equipment with demonstrated mechanical knowledge to diagnose component, troubleshoot, repair, communicate and document.
- Reasoning ability equivalent to a level of applying principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagrammatic or schedule form
- Mathematical ability equivalent to a level of shop math - (The position may require different actual mathematical applications)
- Language ability equivalent to a level which is typically evidenced by an ability to read safety rules, instructions in the use and maintenance of shop tools and equipment and methods and procedures in mechanical drawing and layout work. Speaks clearly & distinctly.
- Provide and maintain proper licensure, medical card & acceptable driving record
- Proven experience handling multiple projects and priorities while maintaining tight deadlines; highly organized with attention to detail.
- Accurately complete work orders or other maintenance repair documentation
- Ensure OSHA, DOT, MSHA, EPA, DNR, safety and environmental regulation compliance
- May be required to operate & maintain company vehicle to perform field service repair then operate repaired equipment to ensure proper working condition after repairs have been completed
- Responsible to provide own basic hand tools, pneumatics and some specialty tools
- Frequently working in an environment with: Exposure to varying elements and all weather conditions, Atmospheric Conditions, Proximity to moving mechanical parts and exposed to fumes, odors, mists, adhesives, loud noise and vibration. May be working within a structural building or in the outdoors.
- While performing routine maintenance or other mechanical activities may be required to Frequently: stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, reach, handle, finger, near acuity and depth perception; Occasionally hearing, climb, twist and color vision. Lift 20-50# occasionally, 10-25# frequently and up to 10# constantly.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
