THE POSITION

Are you interested in building on your current, practical knowledge and beginning a new career? Join the Department of Labor and Industry's Bureau of Occupational and Industrial Safety (BOIS) in the administration and enforcement of safety standards within an assigned geographic area as a Certification, Accreditation and Licensing Inspector Trainee. If you are a self-motivated individual who enjoys being home-office based, educating customers on commonwealth requirements, and working with the public to keep all people in Pennsylvania safe, then we want you on our team!


DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Certification, Accreditation, and Licensing (CAL) Inspector Trainee, you will learn how to perform inspections for the enforcement of various laws and regulations prior to promotion to a CAL Inspector. Work involves riding along with inspectors and supervisors, preparing accurate reports, and responding to inquiries regarding inspection guidelines, procedures, and practices. In this role, you will assist in

  • Inspecting Asbestos abatement project sites.
  • Inspecting Lead abatement project sites.
  • Auditing Asbestos and Lead abatement training providers.
  • Inspecting retail and secondhand locations selling bedding and upholstered furniture items.
  • Inspecting retail locations selling stuffed toy articles.
  • Preparing reports of inspection and audit findings.
  • Communicating effectively with stakeholders and the public.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Work hours are negotiable.
  • This position requires travel.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience in building maintenance or construction, workplace safety or inspection, retail sales, or customer service; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • You must possess an active motor vehicle license.
  • You must obtain a valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania asbestos worker training course completion certificate, a valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania lead-based paint activities worker training course completion certificate, and a valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania lead-based paint activities inspector training course completion certificate within the probationary period.

Other Requirements:

  • You must reside in or be willing to relocate to one of the following counties by the date of hire: Philadelphia, Delaware, Bucks, Montgomery, Chester, Berks, Lehigh.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
