Design Lead Foundation Brakes

The Foundation Brake Design Lead is responsible for supervising a team of engineers in the design, development, validation, and release of brake calipers, brake discs and parking brake systems. The position will include all aspects of component design to ensure all system and vehicle level functional objectives are met. Job responsibilities include but not limited to managing the release of the components, bill of material, CAD drawings, design verification plan, physical testing, management of suppliers, issuing change notices, vehicle build support, issue resolution, and PPAP. The Design Lead will perform up-front feasibility assessments with the Advanced Vehicle Engineering for new programs and develop and maintain design practices, lessons learned, DFMEAs, and DVP&Rs for brake calipers, brake discs, parking brake levers, cables, and parking actuators. The Design Lead will lead engineers and designers in development and releasing process to ensure preferred practices are utilized in new designs and verify manufacturing and assembly feasibility with Supplier Quality Engineering. The Design Lead will work with engineers to assure all program milestones, deliverables, targets, cost, weight, and investment are met for the program.

The Design Lead will:



  • Interface with Vehicle Engineering, suppliers, Purchasing, Quality and Assembly Plants.
  • Manage product performance to meet functional, cost, weight, and investment targets.
  • Oversee product release and change management processes.
  • Direct packaging in vehicle environment.
  • Manage supplier and internal DVPR's and DFMEA's.
  • Support AQP, PSO, product launch and ongoing maintenance of carryover product.
  • Be responsible for design, design practices, lessons learned, DFMEAs, DVP&R, and oversee release of designated components.
  • Oversee the development and refinement of brake calipers, brake friction material, brake discs and parking brake systems considering functional, safety, reliability, warranty, and performance requirements.

Basic Qualifications:



  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related degree field.
  • 7+ years of experience.
  • Aptitude for mechanical engineering demonstrated by work experience or academic projects.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to interface with suppliers and internal cross-functional teams.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Strong GD&T skill set.
  • Strong project management skills/experience.
  • Proficiency in engineering disciplines, such as DVPR, DFMEA, etc.
  • Formal training/experience in problem solving, quality and reliability.
  • Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) Green belt / Black Belt certification.
  • Action oriented and customer focused.
  • Previous experience in brake caliper and brake disc design and development, including brake noise testing.
