What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Distinguished Product Design Engineer to join our innovative team. In this role, you will serve as a key authority in product design and development, recognized for your ability to tackle problems of significant complexity and highly technical nature. Your expertise will guide cross-functional teams and influence decision-making all the way up to the executive level, ensuring that product design initiatives align with organizational goals and mission demands. Additionally, you will lead colleagues as they interface across multiple technical teams, integrating relevant multidisciplinary technology areas to enhance product development.

On any given day, you may be called on to:



  • Act as a trusted consultant to cross functional teams and all levels of management, providing expert guidance on complex design challenges and strategic initiatives. Your insights will shape product development strategies and influence organizational direction.

  • Develop innovative solutions, both independently and within teams, to complex problems that require advanced engineering principles and creative thinking. Lead the formulation of new concepts and practices that can be applied to significant design challenges.

  • Conduct in-depth analysis of information and processes ensuring that product design strategies are aligned with organizational objectives.

  • Provide informed recommendations to all levels of leadership on strategies aimed at resolving our most challenging long-term issues and key Sandia initiatives.

  • Independently negotiate and resolve complex issues related to policies, plans, procedures, objectives, and long-range goals, representing the needs of Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) with external partners while also advocating for the needs of Design Engineering (DE) within SNL. Foster collaborative relationships with stakeholders to identify and implement mutually beneficial solutions that advance project objectives and align with strategic initiatives.

  • Establish yourself as a recognized authority by providing expertise and developing best practices that enhance product design excellence through the application of Model-Based Definition (MBD) and Product Data Management (PDM) concepts and principles.

  • Serve, empower, and mentor colleagues as they exercise critical thinking to develop design solutions, perform analysis, and deliver high-quality mechanical and electro-mechanical design definitions to various customers across multiple mission areas.

  • Ensure that ND (National Defense) and SPP (Strategic Partnership Program) customer needs are satisfied by coordinating specific deliverables, budgets, schedules, and staffing requirements. Monitor project progress and adjust plans as necessary to meet customer expectations.

  • Demonstrate the ability to create and release model-based definitions (MBD) that enhance communication and clarity in design specifications, ensuring that all stakeholders have access to accurate and comprehensive digital product information and requirements.

  • Foster an environment of teamwork and shared success throughout Design Engineering by responding swiftly to emerging technical issues and leveraging existing relationships across the organization to effectively address challenges, drive progress, and shape programmatic direction.

  • Utilize social acuity and emotional intelligence to anticipate and resolve ambiguous and contentious issues with differing technical points of view. Engage in crucial conversations to facilitate understanding and collaboration among stakeholders.

  • Demonstrate the ability to solve sophisticated technical problems in the absence of clear direction, leveraging experience in ambiguous environments to navigate challenges and deliver effective solutions.

  • Establish new procedures and improve existing processes to enhance efficiency across all of Design Engineering, driving continuous improvement and operational excellence.

  • Actively contribute to the advancement of Design Engineering initiatives, collaborating with teams to implement innovative practices and technologies that enhance overall performance and effectiveness.

  • Expertly use PTC Creo to create detailed models and simulations, ensuring that designs are accurately communicated to all stakeholders including Modeling and Simulation (Mod/Sim), manufacturing (PA), inspection, qualification, and acceptance.

  • Develop comprehensive design documentation, including specifications and GD&T, to facilitate effective manufacturing, inspection, and quality assurance processes.



*Minimum of (3) and maximum of (5) letters of recommendations are required to be consideration for this position. Recommendations need to address the demonstrated skills, knowledge and abilities (SKA) that you have performed at a Distinguished level.

Salary Range:

$159,300 - $270,900

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:



  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and twelve (12) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and relevant experience.

  • Active DOE Q or DOD TS security clearance.



Qualifications We Desire:



  • Extensive knowledge of scientific and engineering methods, with a proven track record in solving complex design and development challenges.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading complex design and development projects, with a focus on delivering innovative solutions that meet organizational objectives.

  • In-depth understanding of and experience with implementing organizational policies and industry standards that govern research and design activities.

  • Strong negotiation skills with the ability to resolve conflicts and issues effectively, ensuring alignment with SNL policies, organizational goals, and stakeholder expectations.

  • Proficient in interpreting and creating technical documents, including drawings, schematics, and specifications.

  • Advanced knowledge of CAD and CAM tools, with the ability to apply these technologies effectively in product design.

  • Solid understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing principles to ensure design integrity and manufacturability (ASME GD&T Certification is highly desirable).

  • Exceptional technical judgment in selecting appropriate methods and techniques for product development, balancing innovation with feasibility.

  • Advanced knowledge of PDM tools, with ability to apply configuration management principles to oversee design authorization and changes throughout the product lifecycle (experience using PTC Winchchill PDMLink is highly desirable).

  • Ability to effectively engage with customers and suppliers to define expectations, responsibilities, and ensure technical requirements are met on time and within allocated budgets.

About Our Team:

Organization 2957 provides mechanical design engineering services to Sandia National Laboratories' engineering staff using Computer Aided Design modeling applications such as Pro/Engineer and SolidWorks. We partner with Product Realization Teams to create high quality design model and drawings of systems, components and layouts including assembly and piece part definition. We focus on programs related to National Security which include nuclear weapons, integrated military systems, transportation, satellites, etc.

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).
