Job Description
Provides technical advice and performs operations related to ammunition and high explosives.



Duties and Responsibilities


* Applies concepts, policies, and guidelines contained in applicable SOPs/Risk Assessments to thoroughly inspect and/or modify foreign and/or domestic ammunition or explosives.

* Reviews available models, drawings, x-rays and schematic diagrams prior to the modification of domestic or foreign ammunition/explosives.

* Formulates plans to safely and effectively modify ammunition for static detonation.

* Reviews test plans to ensure that all technical test requirements are met.

* Collects test data and prepares inspection reports on damage to munitions before and after rough handling, packaging, or transportation tests or munitions that have been fired and recovered for analysis tests.

* Prepares explosive charges for static detonation tests and employs series, parallel, and combination firing circuits to fire charges.

* Conducts searches of firing and recovery ranges for hazardous unexploded ordnance and other live and inert ammunition components.

* Collects unserviceable, deteriorated, and obsolete explosives and residue, ammunition and ammunition components from loading plants, test sites, and storage areas.

* Prepares demolition pits, determines compatibility of items to be placed in pits for destruction, and engages in demolition operations by burning or detonation in accordance with Federal and State environmental regulations and permits.

Equipment Operation and Maintenance

* Operates, adjusts, sets up, and maintains locally fabricated and Ammunition Peculiar Equipment specialized for the mission, such as hydraulic presses, crimping machines, bullet pull machines, resizing presses, sewing machines, primer insertion/removal machines, spent brass sorting machines, band saws, torque machines and fuse assembly and disassembly machines.

* Operates heavy machinery directly or by remote control, from behind barricades or inside bomb proofs.

* Uses a variety of hand tools and devices, such as portable propane burners, oxyacetylene torches, and equipment for residual propellant decontamination and demilitarization of tracers in projectiles.

* Uses a variety of magnetometers to search for unexploded ordinance.

Satellite Accumulation Site(s) (SAS)/Temporary Storage Site (TSS)/Temporary Storage Disposal Facility (TSDF) Management * Assists in the management and disposal of Hazardous Waste Munitions (HWM) by ensuring compliance with requirements relative to receiving, labeling, marking, handling, storing, packaging, inventory and record-keeping of HWM.

* Performs mandated inspections of the SAS, TSS and the TSDF Open Burning/Open Detonation (OB/OD) as promulgated by Federal, State, DOD and local regulations.

* Incumbent may work in different areas to include ammunition, weapons, environmental conditioning or ballistics.

* Provides full range of ammunition/explosives accountability functions, including physical inventories, data input/output, compatibility storage, research, ammunition warehousing, and similar functions.

* Processes issue and turn-in of ammunition and explosive materials.

* Prepares JHAs and conducts/participates in HAWGs for ammunition processes and modifications.

* Provides job related training to various audiences and conducts munitions related research.
Qualifications

Required Skills and Qualifications



* Shall possess and provide a Certificate of Completion from the Naval School Explosive Ordnance Disposal (NAVSCOLEOD).

* Sufficient number of UXO personnel qualified in accordance with Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board (DDESB) Technical Paper (TP) 18 to accomplish the UXO and MPPEH missions.

* Shall possess, within 9 months of employment:

(a) Ammunition Skill Level III Certification in accordance with ATC Regulation 350-8

(b) Explosive Test Operator Certification in accordance with ATC Regulation 350-7.

* Shall possess a certification for Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) within 6 months of employment.

* Shall possess a Class C Commercial Driver's License (CDL) endorsed for Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) and unrestricted for air brakes.

* Shall possess license to operate forklifts up to 25,000lbs., backhoes, farm tractors, bulldozers, and other required support equipment.

* Shall possess a clearance for unaccompanied access to Arms, Ammunition, and Explosives (AA&E) within 6 months of employment.

* Shall be Respiratory Protection qualified, to include medical screening, fit checks, and Respiratory Protection Training.



Physical Qualifications

* The work of this position is performed in the field where you are subject to the environment and sometimes in an environmentally controlled office environment.

* Must be capable of lifting 105 lbs. chest high unassisted repeatedly during the duty day.

* Must be able to lift and transport 105 lbs. unassisted over level ground for 50 ft.

* Must be able to ascend and descend equipment.

* Must be tolerant of frequent weapons systems firings.

* Must not have color vision deficiency.

* Must have good manual dexterity.

* Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for work tasks assigned.

Terms of Employment & Eligibility Requirements

* Must be a U.S. Citizen.

* Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.

* Must possess a valid driver's license, without special restrictions.

* Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical and periodic retests.

* Must be able to successfully complete a background check.

* Must possess or be able to obtain a security clearance prior to employment and maintain security clearance for the duration of employment.

Rate of Pay/Benefits

Hourly Rate: $57.03
