Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Information Technology Client Solutions Team consists of two distinct units: the Client Solutions Technicians and the Endpoint Administrators. This cohesive team is dedicated to delivering tier 2 and tier 3 support to faculty and staff members. Their expertise encompasses a wide range of technology-related issues, specifically those pertaining to UNCW owned endpoints used by faculty and staff. The Client Solution Technicians provide hands-on technical support to the end-users for their designated endpoint. The Endpoint Administrators focus on endpoint management and the security of those endpoints.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Computer Consultant works independently and is responsible for resolving call/trouble tickets and monitoring progress on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis against defined parameters. This role involves efficiently resolving tickets while maintaining up-to-date and accurate documentation, including problem resolution. The consultant will create and manage daily schedules and appointments to ensure efficient movement between buildings and users, while remaining flexible to handle emergencies. Additionally, they will set priorities and utilize ticket tracking software effectively to minimize escalations. Strong problem-solving skills, proficiency in ticket tracking software, and excellent organizational and time management skills are essential for this position.

Responsibilities include:

  • Follows procedures or technical instructions and creates the same as necessary for users and/or peers. Serves as a productive team member or technical lead on various IT-related projects.
  • Assists with timely completion of project tasks and ensure completion of direct assignments.
  • Advises project team on end-user impact while working to reach project goals.
  • Interacts with both ITS and outside departments to test, troubleshoot, and resolve project issues.
  • Responsible for ensuring that security configuration documentation (e.g., baseline, backup, etc.) exists for all critical systems and that the documentation accurately reflects the current state.
  • Demonstrates substantial technical knowledge in the areas including (but not limited to) desktop and laptop computer hardware and software (Mac and Windows), common peripherals, mobile devices, networking connections, and scripting.
  • Must be able to communicate technical information effectively and in non-technical terminology.
  • Stays current with the latest technology and trends and advises peers and managers of impact based on knowledge of the organization to independently and methodically step through the process to troubleshoot, assess, and analyze non-routine problems as they arise.
  • Uses the same technique to create technical documents and instructions.
  • Independently performs diagnostics and maintenance of office, lab, and teaching lab technologies, troubleshooting non-routine problems as they arise.
  • Sets up and configures new hardware and software, as well as performs data migration and training on new technologies and equipment.
  • Creates knowledge base articles on common issues and refers end-users to documented solutions to enable self-support and faster problem resolution. Serves as a technical resource to clients by analyzing and assessing client needs and advising on the purchase and functionality of the microcomputer systems, software, and peripherals to create an effective and appropriate solution.
  • Ensures all critical systems and applications you manage receive security patches and vulnerability remediation in a timely manner according to best practices and documented standards and procedures.
  • In consultation with management, ensures all critical systems have security monitoring, logging, alerting, and scanning enabled and maintained using the campus-approved systems.
  • Responsible for ensuring that security configuration documentation (e.g., baseline, backup, etc.) exists for all critical systems and that the documentation accurately reflects the current state.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Graduation from a two year technical college with a major in an Information Technology field and one year in the information technology field related to the position's role; or graduation from a four year college or university and one year experience in the information technology field related to the position's role; or graduation from a four year college or university with a major in an Information Technology area. Related information technology experience may be substituted year for year for the required education.
Preferred education, professional skills and experience

  • Computer Science or Information Systems degree and 2 years of work experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills and ability to interact with a broad range of faculty, staff, and students.
  • Experience with troubleshooting a wide range of software such as Microsoft and Apple operating systems, Microsoft Office, and other utilities and Web-based applications.
  • Ability to connect to both wired and wireless networks.
  • Ability to climb a ladder as well as lift and carry 30 lbs.

Required Certifications or licensure
Dell and/or Apple certifications or ability to obtain certifications within first year of hire.
