Salary: The budgeted annual salary range for this position is $110,000 to $160,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience while also considering internal equity.

Position Summary
We are seeking a passionate medical educator with a proven record of teaching excellence in microbiology and immunology. This individual will play a critical role in teaching foundational knowledge in these disciplines and collaborating with clinicians to address medically important microbiology and immunology in medicine. The ideal candidate is dedicated to helping medical students achieve their fullest potential by fostering a nurturing, supportive, and safe learning environment-one that empowers students to engage, take risks, and openly address gaps in their knowledge without fear.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and deliver high-quality, engaging instructional materials in microbiology, infectious disease, immunology, immunopharmacology, and rheumatology.
  • Implement evidence-based teaching strategies that foster active learning, critical thinking, and meaningful engagement.
  • Connect foundational science concepts to clinical practice, helping students understand how knowledge translates to patient care.
  • Maintain course content that is current, research-informed, and aligned with curriculum objectives.
  • Utilize assessment data and student feedback to continuously improve instructional effectiveness and learning outcomes.
  • Serve as a Course Director, managing course planning, delivery, and evaluation with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate with faculty across Rockford, Chicago, and Peoria campuses to ensure alignment and consistency in course content and assessments.
  • Develop and administer assessments to measure student learning, including performance on tests, quizzes, and standardized exams.
  • Provide mentorship, individualized academic support, and constructive feedback to students.
  • Collaborate with faculty across multiple disciplines to integrate basic and clinical sciences within the curriculum.
  • Actively participate in faculty development initiatives to enhance instructional techniques and learning strategies.
  • Engage in scholarly activities, including curriculum innovation, educational research, and dissemination through publications or presentations.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, campus and college committees, and accreditation-related activities to support institutional goals.
  • Contribute to the College of Medicine's mission through community outreach, interdisciplinary collaborations, and service-related initiatives.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    • Terminal degree (PhD, MD, DO, or equivalent) in a relevant field such as immunology, microbiology, or a related medical specialty. The degree must be conferred by the time of hire.
    • Demonstrated a history of effective teaching, with positive student evaluations and evidence of strong student performance on quizzes, exams, or standardized assessments.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to build trust and rapport with students, faculty, and staff.
    • Proven ability to collaborate effectively across interdisciplinary teams and multiple campuses.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience in developing or leading integrated medical curricula that bridge basic and clinical sciences.
    • Demonstrated success in academic leadership, including course administration and curriculum development.
    • Expertise in modern pedagogical approaches, including active learning, problem-based learning (PBL), and team-based learning (TBL).
    • Experience with technology-enhanced learning tools, such as online platforms, virtual simulations, or digital assessments.
    • A track record of scholarly contributions to medical education, including publications, presentations, or research.
    • Commitment to fostering an inclusive, diverse, safe, and supportive learning environment.
