Position Overview

The UAS Level 1 Pilot role serves as an introduction to operation of UAS equipment, flight operations, and the typical responsibilities of a UAS pilot. In addition, it is also an introduction for survey instruments and data collection equipment to measure precise distance (including total stations, levels, GPS receivers and other company provided equipment). Employees in this role will be visual observers of project missions until they have completed McAdams Flight Training.

Key Responsibilities



  • Communicate important information back to the Pilot-In-Charge (Obstructions, air traffic, possible interference from by standers and understanding of typical flight jargon utilized during typical project missions, as well as other surveying related communication like cuts and fills, angles and distances, movement directions, etc.)
  • Follow directions and guidance from the Pilot-in-charge to support project objectives
  • Maintain accurate field notes and flight logs following established protocols and expectations
  • Learn the fundamentals of flight planning under the supervision of senior team members
  • Perform and practice maneuvers to develop operating skills of UAS equipment under supervision
  • Demonstrate consistent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
  • Develop working knowledge of laws pertaining to UAS operations; demonstrate consistent reliability in all supervised operations of UAS
  • Read and interpret sectional charts
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure (using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals) and compute rates, ratios and percent.
  • Measure inverts and pipe sizes for structures
  • Gain understanding of computer software such as Microsoft word/Windows
  • Maintains professional image through proper conduct and presentable appearance
  • Follows guidelines and company standards set forth for the Geomatics department
  • Ensures that all necessary supplies and equipment are loaded in the company vehicle
  • Aids in maintaining a safe and respectful work environment by following company policies and procedures
  • Responsible for escalating potential hazards and unsafe working conditions
  • Represent McAdams in the field with professionalism through proper conduct and presentable appearance


Skills + Experience



  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1 to 3 years industry experience preferred
  • Demonstrate core competencies of the Instrument Operator Level 1 and UAS Pilot Level 1 duties
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Successfully pass a motor vehicle records check, drug test, and functional assessment
  • Certified FAA sUAS Remote Pilot
  • Minimum Flight Hours: 0 hours
