Position Highlights

University Facility Services at the University of Arizona is seeking a Mason, Lead. The Mason Lead will be responsible for supervising, directing, and assisting a team of masons on various construction projects. This role requires advanced masonry skills, a strong understanding of construction safety practices, and the ability to lead a team to ensure high-quality work and timely project completion. The Mason Lead will also ensure that all masonry work aligns with the project's specifications, local building codes, and safety standards.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Coordinates and directs a crew.
  • Leads two or more full-time employees, or their equivalent, on a regular basis.
  • Gives input regarding hiring, evaluation, promotion and termination of employees, or makes related recommendations.
  • Trains and supervises staff in all aspects of masonry.
  • Plans, projects and schedules grounds crew activities over short and long-range periods and assigns priorities for their completion.
  • Reviews projects for structural and operational safety.
  • Monitors all activities with regard to progress and cost; advises supervisor of significant variations as required.
  • Ensures subordinates compliance with established safety guidelines.
  • Fabricates, alters, repairs and maintains walls, sidewalks, street curbs, and other related structures or surfaces.
  • Cuts or breaks bricks and concrete using hammers, powered abrasive saws, paving breakers, drills and/or hand tools.
  • Molds expansion joints and edges using edging tools, jointers and straightedge.
  • Prepares surfaces prior to beginning work.
  • Operates equipment such as forklift, dump truck and flatbed.
  • Coordinates periodically with supervisor and receives guidance as to desired standards or quality of service provided.
  • Perform complex masonry work including bricklaying, stonework, blockwork, and mortar application.
  • Lay, position, and align bricks, blocks, stones, and other materials to ensure the desired structural integrity and aesthetic quality.
  • Ensure work is done to proper specifications, using measuring tools, levels, and plumb lines.
  • Read blueprints, layout and form for concrete pads.
  • Determines work requirements and sequence of masonry/concrete assignments through review of work orders, plans or drawings.
  • Lays out work using chalk lines, plumb bobs, tapes, squares and levels.
  • Estimates materials and labor.
  • Work with the project manager and other trades to develop and implement work schedules, track progress, and ensure the project stays on track.
  • Review blueprints, drawings, and other construction documents to ensure proper execution of the masonry work.
  • Monitor and manage materials needed for the job, ensuring sufficient supplies are on hand and minimizing waste.
  • Inspect work for accuracy, quality, and conformance to specifications.
  • Address any issues or defects promptly, making adjustments as needed to meet quality standards.
  • Communication: Communicate effectively with project managers, contractors, subcontractors, and team members to ensure smooth workflow and resolve issues as they arise. Provide regular updates on project progress, material needs, and any potential delays.
  • Equipment and Tool Management: Oversee the proper use and maintenance of masonry tools and equipment. Ensure all tools and equipment are safe to use and in good working condition.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Masonry Techniques & Materials: A deep understanding of different masonry materials (brick, stone, concrete, etc.), their properties, and the correct methods for handling, laying, and finishing them. Building Codes and Safety Regulations: Familiarity with local building codes, safety standards, and regulations regarding masonry work. Blueprint Reading: Ability to interpret and follow architectural blueprints and plans. Construction

Tools and Equipment: Knowledge of the various tools and equipment used in masonry, from trowels to scaffolding and cranes, and how to maintain and use them safely.

Mortar Mixing & Application: In-depth knowledge of mortar types, mixing ratios, and application techniques.

Problem-Solving: Capability to identify issues on the job site and determine effective solutions, whether it's related to materials, techniques, or scheduling.

Precision and Attention to Detail: Skill in measuring, cutting, and positioning masonry materials to exact specifications. Project

Planning and Time Management: Ability to oversee project timelines, coordinate resources, and ensure work is completed on schedule and within budget.

Physical Stamina: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods. Ability to lift 50lbs

Work Under Pressure: Ability to handle pressure and deadlines while maintaining quality and safety standards.

Adaptability: Ability to adjust to changes in project scope, materials, or conditions while keeping the team on track.

Quality Control: Ensuring work is completed to the highest standard, inspecting the work for accuracy and ensuring it meets quality and safety standards.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in a college/university setting.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing others.
  • OSHA and Masonry certifications
  • Three years experience of Blueprint Reading: Ability to interpret and work from construction drawings and blueprints is often a preferred qualification.
