Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary or hourly range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $56,200 - $70,200.

Job Closing Date

This position is fully on-site, Monday- Friday 8am -5pm.

About the Job

Through individual appointments and group advising, provide academic and career advising to UCM students and alumni whose future career interests are medicine or other allied health professions (pharmacy, physician assistant, nursing, physical therapy, etc.). Work collaboratively with the Director on presentations and webinars for current UCM students and specific pre-med and pre-health student populations. Collaborate with campus student service offices, Academic Advising Offices, Career Center, Housing (LLC), Registrar, Tutoring Center, and Admissions on programming and initiatives. Update the Pre-Health Advising website and brochures.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the Director in advising and assisting students and specialized pre-medical/pre-health student populations on all aspects of their academic experience, including progression and requirement matters for the major and School (e.g., academic probation, dismissal, Normal Progress Policy). Advise students with GPA or progress problems and recommend appropriate courses of action by the major and School.
  • Through in-person and/or virtual meetings, provide individual and group pre-health advising to all undergraduate, graduate, alumni, and specific pre-medical/pre-health student programs (PRIME+, Health Scholars, Beyond the MD, and any new healthcare-focused LLCs that may be created in the future). Provide coaching and career-related topics in the health professions and early and general career advising as needed.
  • Understands current theories and practices of inclusive pre-medical and pre-health advising and remains current and updated on pre-health/pre-medical information, best practices, and university policies and procedures that impact pre-medical and pre-health students.
  • Assist Director in collaborating with UC Merced departments on student success and retention initiatives, especially for pre-medical and pre-health students from historically underrepresented in medicine and first-generation college students; collaborate with academic departments and advising offices across campus to support pre-medical and pre-health students.
  • Assist, advise, and guide students through meeting both academic and career-related admissions requirements and supports students through the medical and health professions school application process.
  • Support Director as an academic advisor for students in specialized UCSF pre-medical program (PRIME+). In collaboration with UCSF OME (Office of Medical Education) and as support to the Director, advise PRIME+ students with any progress or GPA issues and concerns.
  • Assist the Director with various data-collection or data-analysis projects. Maintain a database of current students and alumni. Monitor the success of graduates in admission to graduate and professional school programs. Annually assess the needs/trends as related to Pre-Health Advising.
  • In collaboration with the Living Learning Community (LLC) Coordinator and Faculty, assist in the planning and implementing activities for students in the Health Scholars and Beyond MD pre-health programs focusing on health careers.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director on presentations for accepted students during special on campus events, information sessions, and workshops.
  • Collaborate with other student service offices (marketing, admissions, etc.) to update communications (emails, brochures, website, and other electronic media).
  • Assist with event planning to include Bobcat Day, Summer Orientation, and welcome events for PRIME+ students and parents.
  • Attend NAAHP (National Association of Advisors in the Health Professions) and WAAHP (Western Association of Advisors in the Health Professions) national and regional conferences. Serve as a member of various UCM campus and UCSF OME committees. Serve as staff advisor to several student pre-health organizations. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or equivalent experience/training. (Required)
  • Advanced degree from an accredited university. (Preferred)
  • Three (3) years of directly related, progressively responsible experience in a student service job function, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. A master's degree in counseling, Higher Education, Student Affairs or a related area may substitute for one year of experience. (Required)

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Solid verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of college policies, procedures, and practices (Preferred)
  • Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs. (Preferred)
  • Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with student development theories.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and planning skills.
  • Pre-health student advising experience, preferred. (Preferred)
