DESCRIPTION

Want to gain real-world experience and make a tangible impact on your community? The Finance Department is seeking a creative, highly talented, and motivated Intern II. This internship will provide university students hands-on experience and on-the-job training related to their accounting or finance degree. It also provides an opportunity for students to learn about government accounting while applying classroom theories and concepts to "real-world" situations at one of the Inland Empire's best cities.

Under the supervision of the Accounting Supervisor (or other Finance Department supervisors) and mentors within the occupation, incumbents in the position will assist in the areas of accounts payable, accounts receivable, budget, purchasing, general accounting, and payroll. The position will also have a unique opportunity to assist with the implementation of the new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.

The City offers a casual and energetic business environment. This position is required to work a minimum of 16-hours and maximum of 19-hours per week. This internship is year-round and may be modified every quarter. Workdays of supervising city staff are Monday thru Thursday, 7am to 6pm, so there is flexibility with the incumbent's school schedule.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a reference / background check including livescan and pass a pre-employment medical examination (which will include a drug/alcohol screening).

The Organization
The City of Corona is a General Law city operating under a Council-Manager form of government. Policymaking and legislative authority are vested in the City Council, consisting of a Mayor and four Council Members. Members of the City Council are elected by District to a four-year term. The Mayor is selected by the Council and serves as the presiding officer for one year.

The City is organized into the following departments/organizational units: City Manager's Office, Community Services, Economic Development, Finance, Fire, Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal and Risk Management, Planning & Development, Police, Public Works, and Utilities. Oversight of these departments is divided between the City Manager and two Assistant City Managers.

The City's total operating budget for Fiscal Year 2025 is $ 409.7 million with a General Fund operating budget of $ 209.7 million. Corona enjoys a workforce of 922 dedicated employees who provide high quality services to its residents and visitors each day.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

While assigned to the Finance Department:

  • Prepare journal entries and enter financial data into the City's accounting software or spreadsheets.
  • Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable by processing invoices and payments
  • Assist with the reconciliation of various activities such as banking activity, credit card accounts, and outstanding customer accounts.
  • Review and verify transactions and reports for accuracy and compliance with City policies. This may include accounting transactions, budget requests, or purchasing requisitions.
  • Assist with special projects such as the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation.
  • Answer phone calls, respond to emails, or assist with other administrative tasks as needed by the Finance Department.
  • Efficiently utilize time in executing assigned tasks neatly and accurately.
  • Effectively communicate with internal team members and external customers.
  • Performs other duties assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES

Education:

  • Current enrollment in a program from an accredited post-secondary educational or vocational institution with major coursework related to a specialized field of study.
  • Course work or field of study in accounting or finance is highly desired.

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary office classification although standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information.

Mental Demands

Environmental Conditions

Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
