We are looking to add a Director of Technical Services to our West Region. As the Director of Technical Services for the West Region at Knife River Corporation, you will get to lead and oversee a team of technical subject matter experts in developing and implementing strategic initiatives related to land use permitting and planning, environmental and regulatory compliance, and engineering services. This role will drive technical excellence in mine planning, pit mapping, aggregate prospecting, and aerial drone services while providing expert consultation on special capital expenditure projects. Additionally, you will oversee geology and hydrology services, ensuring sustainable resource development and operational compliance with all regulatory requirements while optimizing operational efficiency and long-term resource planning. You will collaborate with and support region-wide operational elements for business development and growth strategies aimed at organizational improvements that align with our competitive EDGE objectives. You will serve as a region representative to industry committees, working groups, and trade organizations. Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in majors related to urban and regional planning, natural resource management, geology, construction, mining, engineering, environmental science, related fields, or equivalent experience.
- Five or more years of proven experience in the construction materials industry.
- Highly detail-oriented with the ability to meet assigned deadlines while working on multiple projects.
- Comprehensive technical knowledge of land use permitting, environmental and regulatory compliance, mine planning, and aggregate prospecting.
- Proven leadership skills and abilities with a high degree of professionalism and strong interpersonal / communication skills.
- Ability to operate independently with minimal supervisory oversight while accomplishing targeted objectives.
- Strong working knowledge of MS Office suite of products and industry-related planning and mapping computer software (ArcGIS, AutoCAD, SketchUp, etc.)
- High ethical and moral standards.
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
Preferred Requirements:
- Master's degree in urban & regional planning, environmental science, construction management, related fields, or equivalent experience.
- Ten or more years of experience in the construction materials industry, with progressive, proven experience establishing and working with regulatory bodies and permitting agencies.
- GISP, PE, LEED, CEP, or other industry and sustainability accreditation or certification.
Responsibilities:
- Set a positive safety example. Drive and support corporate and local safety initiatives.
- Identify and meet with key decision makers within the government, planning community, DOT, airport authorities, etc., and develop relationships to aid the industry in market growth.
- Support stakeholder engagement and relevant convening, including policy and technical exchanges among government officials, R&D facilities, subject experts, etc.
- Leads and oversees due diligence efforts for land acquisitions, permitting, and regulatory compliance, ensuring thorough evaluation of environmental, geological, and legal factors to support strategic business decisions.
- Oversees the region's GIS program, ensuring effective integration of geospatial data for mine planning, land use analysis, environmental compliance, and operational decision-making.
- Lead process improvement initiatives and best practices and establish performance metrics (KPIs) to drive efficiency, quality, and cost reduction.
- Partners with the operations team(s) to understand internal customer needs and requirements to aid in effective communication and focused strategic planning efforts.
- Works to develop and maintain working partnerships with major customers and seeks out potential customers to partner with.
- Develop and implement quality control standards for technical services, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance in mine planning, environmental assessments, permitting, and geospatial analysis across the region.
- Builds strong teams, develops technical services talent within the organization, and provides leadership and vision to foster employee growth and retention.
- Oversees region-wide technical services team members to provide expert technical support to all area plants, quarries, job sites, and customers (internal and external).
- Attend and participate in appropriate national/regional meetings, technical panels, working groups, and committees to represent the company and industry.
- Ability to travel on short notice and for extended periods.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
