For almost 40 years, the Sarver Heart Center at the University of Arizona has been at the forefront of groundbreaking discoveries and innovative therapies. Our scientists, physicians, and nurses have significantly advanced the field of cardiovascular medicine and transformed cardiovascular science and patient care worldwide. The center has recently appointed a new Director, Dr. Hesham Sadek, whose vision for the center is excellence in cardiovascular care, research, and education. The Sarver Heart Center is seeking Research Associates to plan, execute, facilitate and promote advanced technical/scientific research projects in the center's lab. The ideal candidates will recognize the need for innovation and develop or incorporate advances in research concepts, methodologies and approaches. The incumbents design, develop and test new equipment, instruments, reagents, and/or experimental protocols for research. This position collaborates with other researchers as appropriate. They participate in the preparation and writing of grant applications and reports and (co-) author scientific research manuscripts. Duties & Responsibilities |
Research Development and Design
- Recommends and initiates new or modified procedures and techniques based upon latest developments in assigned field or analysis of research data.
- Designs and plans research experiments under the direction of the principal investigator.
- Review progress of research, evaluate research results, formulate research methods, and develop research criteria.
- Develop innovative methods and approaches to solve scientific problems while meeting goals and objectives in accordance with priorities, time, funding, and other limitations.
- Participate in the strategy, structure, and development of grant proposals including protocol development and scope of work definition.
Research Execution
- Independently perform experiments, interpret data, and analyze results.
- Apply new assays and techniques to advance assigned research projects.
- Develop and establish functional timelines to complete assigned work to meet the requirements of the research obligations.
- Foster collaborations and network with researchers in the Department, University, and outside institutions.
- Contribute to ensuring regulatory compliance of the research program by coordinating with senior leadership to meet the reporting requirements of granting agencies as required by the research program as it relates to animal colonies, animal protocols, and DEA registration, etc.
- Assist in training and supervision of laboratory staff and students.
- Lab equipment management.
Publication, Presentations and Writing:
- Participate in laboratory meetings, seminars, and journal clubs.
- Present research findings at local and national meetings and conferences.
- Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
- Participates with principal investigator and other professional personnel in writing of reports and papers for publication.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of coordinating experiments, and completing analysis, statistics, and interpretation.
- Ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner orally and in writing.
- Ability to participate at scientific conferences and present findings.
- Knowledge of grant writing and manuscript preparation.
- Demonstrated ability to independently develop reports and manuscripts and present findings in tabular, oral, written, and/or graphic formats.
- Ability to work under minimal guidance. Ability to use independent judgment to determine best approach and creativity is expected to achieve maximum results and manage new situations.
- Complete knowledge of all job functions and the broad industry best practices, techniques, and standards and exhibit the ability to transfer knowledge and application of complex principles, theories and concepts to peers.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree in Biology or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
- Minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Master's degree in Biology.
- Seven (7) years of relevant work experience.
