Office of the CEO, Government Affairs
The American Chemical Society Government Affairs office (GA) is committed to fulfilling ACS's charter obligations to increase public understanding of chemical science issues and bring its expertise to bear on national policy issues. The office's activities are non-partisan and issues-based. Government Affairs educates policymakers on issues involving chemical science and technology, works with ACS governance to develop ACS positions on public policy issues, and advocates those positions before policymakers. The Office is also committed to informing ACS members on pending science policy issues and facilitating their involvement in government relations activities.

Position Summary
The Science Policy Fellowship is designed to provide hands-on learning in public affairs and government relations while contributing technical expertise to our Government Affairs team. This position encompasses policy analysis, development, advocacy, member engagement, and communication on key public policy issues for ACS.

The fellow will stay informed about relevant policy issues and the political landscape, draft position statements for management review, and build relationships with policymakers. Responsibilities include engaging with coalitions, advocating for ACS positions through various communication methods, and collaborating with ACS governance to support policy and advocacy initiatives. The role also involves leveraging grassroots advocacy to advance ACS's mission and keeping members informed about pertinent issues. This position reports to the Senior Manager for Federal Relations.

Accountabilities
Policy Analysis and Fellowship Project
1. Monitor legislation, policies, and regulations in assigned issue areas; identify emerging trends and perform policy analysis.
2. Develop and recommend policy positions for ACS, drafting position statements, legislative reports, publication articles, and other materials as needed.
3. Conduct an independent fellowship project under general supervision, gaining professional experience and skills.
Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement
4. Collaborate with the Government Affairs team to effectively communicate science policy issues to the public and policymakers.
5. Establish and maintain relationships with policymakers and staff, representing ACS in meetings and through regular communications to advance its recommendations.
6. Serve as an ACS representative with external stakeholders, including government officials, coalitions, educational groups, and members of the public.
Skills Development and Internal Support
7. Develop lobbying skills and deepen understanding of legislative and executive branch processes.
8. Assist in evaluating current ACS activities, contributing to efforts that enhance their effectiveness.

Required Experience and Skills
* Education: Ph.D. in a chemical science or engineering discipline, or a master's degree with equivalent experience.
* Experience: 0-2 years of public policy experience.
* Skills: Strong research abilities, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to convey technical information to non-technical audiences.
* Interest: Demonstrated passion for science and technology policy issues.
