Department Summary

System IT is a component of The University of North Texas System. The mission of System IT is simple: to be the best at delivering customer-aligned IT solutions and services. Our services are provided to all member institutions using an IT shared services governance model.

System IT provides the primary technology used by all campuses to support their operations. These include: shared resources of data centers, computing hardware, software applications, network and voice communications, collaboration and productivity capabilities, central web services, risk management, and security and compliance services. As a department, we strive to provide the most professional personnel possible to serve our campus constituents.

Position Overview

The role necessitates that the individual possesses strong expertise in cloud data engineering as well as data management leadership skills. The Senior Data Engineer leads and collaborates with clients, data stewards, project/program managers, and other IT teams to transform data into valuable information and insights for informed organizational decision-making. They integrate business strategy with statistical, mathematical, and predictive modeling expertise to deliver timely, consistent, and reliable information to their team and customers. Additionally, they propose innovative and creative solutions to problems by applying data mining techniques to uncover new patterns from large data sets.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, and seven years' experience in data engineering, data analytics, data management, or closely related field; or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Technical Skills: Demonstrated expertise in cloud data engineering, particularly with the Microsoft Fabric data platform, is highly advantageous. Extensive experience in data warehouse data modeling and analysis. Advanced proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Pyspark, R, and Windows PowerShell. Highly proficient in creating and managing data visualizations using tools like Power BI or Tableau.

Problem Solving: Independent and innovative thinker with a strong ability to tackle complex data, research, and statistical challenges. Skilled in handling and integrating data from diverse sources, with exceptional analytical and quantitative capabilities.

Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Continuous Learning: Dedicated to staying current with the latest trends in analytics and business intelligence within higher education.

Integration of Business Strategy: Capable of integrating business strategy with statistical, mathematical, and predictive modeling expertise to provide timely, consistent, and reliable information to the team and customers.

Mentorship and Guidance: Adept at providing mentorship and guidance to junior Data Engineers, fostering their technical skills and professional growth.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred: Masters Degree in Computer Science or a related field.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

Job Duties:



  • Cloud Data Engineering Expertise: Demonstrate strong expertise in cloud data engineering, with a particular focus on the Microsoft Fabric data platform.
  • Data Modeling and Analysis: Perform data modeling and data analysis to support various business needs.
  • Proficiency in Scripting Languages: Utilize scripting languages such as Python, PySpark, R, and Windows PowerShell to develop and maintain data solutions.
  • Visualization Skills: Create and manage data visualizations using tools like Power BI, Tableau, and other similar platforms.
  • AI Skills: Apply data science technologies, including Azure AI/ML and AI Chatbots, to enhance data-driven decision-making processes.
  • Collaboration: Lead and collaborate with clients, data stewards, project/program managers, and other IT teams to transform data into valuable information and insights for informed organizational decision-making.
  • Integration of Business Strategy: Integrate business strategy with statistical, mathematical, and predictive modeling expertise to deliver timely, consistent, and reliable information to the team and customers.
  • Mentorship and Guidance: Provide mentorship and guidance to junior Data Engineers, helping them develop their technical skills and grow professionally.
  • Agile Skills: Demonstrate proficiency in Agile Projects methodologies.
