The incumbent is responsible for receiving, inspecting and delivering freight to all SOM buildings on both the East (Sacramento) and West (Davis) Campus. The incumbent is also responsible for moving laboratory and office furniture and equipment, and for maintaining three storage facilities. The incumbent will interact and work as a team member with the other service units within the SOM Office of Research, including the Health Sciences Instrumentation Facility (HSIF), Shuttle Mail Division, and Central Research Autoclave/Dishwashing Support. The incumbent will work closely with Medical Sciences Planning personnel to assist with various building and renovation projects within the Health System. The incumbent is responsible for helping to maintain the status of the Tupper Hall and Surge 3 receiving docks and will coordinate with EH&S and Salvage to ensure the proper disposal of equipment, furniture and materials. The incumbent will check all incoming material against invoices or bill of lading for verification of items and quantity received. The incumbent will function as the main contact with vendors and the campus central receiving unit regarding freight deliveries for the SOM. The incumbent is responsible for record keeping, logs, personnel time sheet and prioritizing and scheduling of daily work assignment. The incumbent will help survey, organize and maintain three storage facilities.
The Medical Receiving Unit is a service operation and therefore customer service is the highest priority for the unit. The incumbent will respond to all phone, fax and e-mail requests from clients in a timely and friendly manner. The incumbent is responsible for the pick-up and delivery of gas cylinders, alcohol, controlled substances and Federal Express packages. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring adequate and ongoing safety training and procedures and use of personal protective equipment. The incumbent must meet the necessary physical requirements for lifting and moving equipment and furniture, and the skill to operate various lifting and materials-handling tools.

- DMV Class C License
- No minimum education required
- Experience operating a Class C Vehicle
- Experience operating lifting and moving tools and equipment
- Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and perform assigned tasks in a professional and timely manner.
- Knowledge and experience with independently recognizing, analyzing, and solving problems.
- Knowledge and experience handling or directing multiple concurrent tasks, appropriately allocating time and balancing priorities.
- Ability to maintain an inventory system.
- Demonstrates effective communicating information accurately and in a personable manner.
- Ability to read English well enough to comprehend written instructions on invoices, shipping documents, control logs, inventory sheets and correspondence.
- Ability to work within a team setting to achieve goals.
- Knowledge of basic shipping and receiving file and record systems.
- Knowledge of freight receiving, log-in, delivery and package traffic control and inspection practices.
- Good interpersonal communication skills and ability to interact with faculty, staff, students, administrators and professionals from the Campus, Health System and the Private Sector with a customer-service orientation.
- Ability to remain flexible in order to adjust to changing situations.
- Knowledge of safe moving practices and procedures.
- Skill to operate lifting and moving tools and equipment.
- Skill to operate a Class C vehicle.
- Ability to assess, design and implement storage needs, policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of EH&S policies and procedures related to transport of hazardous chemicals, alcohol, and controlled substances.
- Knowledge of University and Health System policy and procedures.

The School of Medicine (SOM) Office of Research is responsible for oversight of all Health System/School of Medicine Research Programs in Davis and Sacramento, involving more than 250 faculty, 300 staff and 200 research trainees.
