Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Set up, adjusts, calibrates, and operators laboratory equipment and instruments such as wet chemical glassware, manually operated instruments, semi-automated instruments, automated instrumentation, standard lab equipment.

Tests materials used as ingredients in various fuels, paving industry, synthetic rubber, plastics, and other products for such qualities as purity, distillation range, viscosity, density, flash point, penetration, soft point, vapor pressure, sulfur content, salt and BSW, pH, and a wide variety of boiler and cooling tower water tests.

Performs routine mathematical calculations such as ratios, percentages, fractions, proportions and normalizations.

Recognizes product characteristics (including discernment of color and appearance) well enough to identify unusual condition(s) for further action and/or to avoid undue hazards.

Responds in a "hands-on" manner to emergencies such as fires, chemical spills, and toxic material releases.

Fills in for coworkers on a scheduled and unscheduled basis.

Tests samples of manufactured products to verify conformity to specifications.

Tests samples of process samples to verify process efficiency.

Records test results on standardized forms and input results into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

Cleans laboratory equipment and lab area in general.

Calibrates laboratory instruments.

Prepares chemical solutions according to standard formulas.

Climbs tanks to obtain samples and transports sample between units and the laboratory.

Works under the direction of the Lead Lab Technician

Reports to the HSRC Laboratory Manager

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.



  • Education and/or Experience Preferred 2 years of college course work with a technical/science background or 1 year of laboratory experience.
  • Language Skills Able to communicate clearly in written and spoken English.
  • Mathematical Skills Able to perform functions listed above as well as learn and successfully work with a variety of computer based applications associated with instrument control.
  • Reasoning Ability Able to think through problems and unusual situations to avoid undue personal danger and production of non-compliant products.


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Must be 18 years of age with a valid Mississippi driver's license. Must successfully complete a six month trial period. Demonstrates acceptable level of knowledge of refinery and lab safety procedures.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must be able to lift 100 pounds maximum infrequently, lift and carry up to 30 pounds frequently. Requires reaching, handling, fingering and feeling. Must be able to climb ladders to work at heights up to and including 50 feet above the ground infrequently and 15 feet above the ground frequently. Must be able to stoop, kneel, and/or crouch on an infrequent basis. Walks and stands on concrete floors for the majority of the work day.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics describe here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Works primarily in an environmentally controlled building (laboratory) in fluorescent lighting. Must go outside infrequently to perform routine maintenance and obtain samples. Handles toxic and hazardous materials and chemicals frequently wearing personal protective equipment and working with or around vent hoods. Operates delicate electronic equipment frequently. Enters operating process units frequently to obtain samples. Works 12-hour (4 on and 4 off) day shift schedule.
