Position Summary

Performs professional engineering work in support of Prince William Water's Environmental Services and Water Reclamation Division. The work involves varied assignments intended to acquaint new graduate engineers with the engineering activities required for the proper operation, design, and maintenance of Prince William Water's water, sanitation sewer systems, or the Environmental Services and Water Reclamation's advanced water reclamation facilities (AWRF). After initial orientation, workers initiate their own daily assignments, follow through on matters, and use independent judgment and training to take appropriate actions to deal with standard recurring situations. Position Responsibilities / Essential Job Functions

- Supports the review and preparation of the five-year Capital Improvement Program for Prince William Water.
- Collects, analyzes, and maintains data related to current water, sewer and AWRF system demand.
- Reviews water, sewer and AWRF construction plans for constructability and impact to existing customers. Participates in meetings to optimize plans for system shutdowns.
- Performs special studies, as needed in support of the operation of the AWRF, water and/or sanitary sewer systems.
- Assists with the preparation of Board presentation packages (maps, reports, slide shows, etc.).
- Provides technical support to other units concerning the operation of the system or facilities. Performs related work as required.
- Identifies and prioritizes capital improvement projects for rehabilitation and/or replacement of AWRF, water and sanitary sewer assets. Assists in long-range planning.
- Assists with evaluating the consequences of failure of assets and develops appropriate maintenance and replacement programs.
- Involved in the compliance program to prevent water quality violations, process inhibition, and air or 503 permit violations.
- Supports the Division in monitoring and developing reports and maintaining information for permit compliance and projects.
- Coordinate with engineering consultants, contractors, and vendors as directed.
- Assists with monitoring water quality testing results throughout the water distribution system.
- Answer questions and provide detailed information to customer inquiries as directed.
- Develops and presents reports for assignments and projects as directed.
- Assists in meeting division/department benchmarks as directed.
- Maintains confidentiality at all times.
- May be deemed essential at any time.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Essential Skills and Experience

Essential Competencies:
- Knowledge of the theories, principles, concepts and practices of engineering as applied to the activities of Prince William Water; surveying techniques; computers and engineering software related to assignment.
- Strong analytical skills using various software programs including but not limited to Microsoft Excel.
- Possess excellent written and oral communication skills including English usage, spelling, and grammar.
- Ability to work cooperatively with all levels and types of personnel including the public.
- Ability to read and understand engineering and architectural plans, maps and records; conduct technical surveys; assemble and analyze data and prepare basic technical reports; operate computer equipment and software applications related to assignment.
Minimum Education and Work Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering, or related field.
- Or a combination of education and experience as described above.
Required Licenses/Certifications and other Special Requirements:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license consistent with Prince William Water policy requirements.

- Work Environment: Primary work is performed indoors in an office setting. Occasionally work is performed outdoors when visiting field sites. When working outdoors, employees are exposed to dirt and soil; unpleasant odors; working outside in hot and humid conditions, or in inclement weather; and to hazards in the work. Employees are required to wear protective gear to protect against hazards in the work. Employees are subject to work beyond the normal scheduled hours.
