Description

The Department of Facilities and Services at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Temporary Maintenance Worker I (Summer Paint Helper). Under the direction of the Operation Manager, the duties of this position requires the individual to assist in the performance of a variety of painting tasks related to maintenance and repair of buildings. Also, preforms task such as the moving furniture and a variety of janitorial duties throughout the campus.

What you'll do:



  • Assist the painters in paints, varnishes, shellacs, urethanes, enamels, stains and other mediums utilizing necessary professional techniques and abilities. Performs work with spray equipment, roller, brush, sponges, etc. to apply medium and uses other necessary related equipment including tape gun and other equipment related to the trade.
  • Assist with the repair of plaster and ensures that all surfaces are smooth and ready
  • Help with the Professional finishing and refinishing of wooden items such as furniture, cabinets, doors, door frames, chair rails, base cove, etc. Prepares surfaces for appropriate finishes (sanding, chemical cleaning, etc.)
  • Assist with the Removal and replacement electrical switch and receptacle covers as needed for job preparation and disassembles and assembles electrical light fixtures as needed for job preparation and completion
  • Assist in the Performing of a variety of carpentry related projects; repairs, replaces, and finishes drywall, repairs or replaces chair rails, cove base , reconditions acoustical ceilings, walls and steel beams, repair or replacement etc. per project. Removal and installation of wall hangings objects such as pictures, bulletin boards, coat racks, etc., secure loose trim and base boards, etc.
  • Assist in the Assembling of scaffoldings-type including but not limited to rolling, pipe, stretch-boards and kick-boards.
  • Must be able to use a variety of power tools such as, sanders, drills, saws and power washers
  • Must be able to perform duties from various ladders and scaffoldings.
  • Must be able to respond during off hours to cover emergency situations.
  • May be required to assist in duties in other areas and units. Such as Housekeeping, Renew Crew and Window Cleaning crew. Also it may require working on both campuses on any given day.
  • Provide janitorial services as it relates to painting projects.
  • Clean and maintain the interior appearance of all football facilities including classrooms, offices, public areas, etc. by sweeping, mopping, stripping, and waxing floors; vacuuming and shampooing carpets, rugs and upholstery; dusting and polishing furniture; washing and cleaning walls, ceilings, doors, windows, etc.; and performing other related internal cleaning activities.
  • Clean and disinfect bathrooms and kitchenettes including walls, floors, lavatories, commodes, sinks, refrigerators, stoves, fixtures, mirrors, etc. Replenish supplies including toilet tissue, towels, and soap.
  • Operate walk-behind and riding scrubbers, high-speed buffers, automated carpet cleaners, power lifts, and all other associated equipment needed to perform duties listed above.
  • Operate equipment in performance of duties such as brooms, mops, vacuums, shampooers, high-speed burnishers, etc. Mixes and dilutes commercial strength disinfectants, germicidal detergents, and other stringent cleaning solutions. Calculates area to determine amounts of cleaning solutions required. Follows established safety procedures in the use of equipment and materials; locking and unlocking doors, offices, classrooms, and meeting rooms as directed by the supervisor. Moves equipment, chairs, tables, etc. to other floors using dollies, carts, etc. on elevators or stairways.
  • Relocate offices and classrooms within buildings and throughout campus by lifting, loading, and unloading furniture, file cabinets, boxes, etc. onto hand trucks, dollies, and box vans for transportation. May require removing desk components, doors, and shelves to ease in relocations. Move, set-up, rearrange, and erect tables, chairs, platforms, bleachers, tents, displays, etc. for registration, commencement, and other special events. Disassemble and store items at the end of events. Must be able to interpret blueprints and drawings as they pertain to special event set-ups.


Pay Grade: 9

Length of Assignment: Approximately 4 months

Work Hours: 37.5

Qualifications

  • High School or an equivalent combination of education and directly related work experience
  • A minimum of six (6) months of experience involving:

    • painting.
    • operating power tools.
    • Must be able to work off ladders
    • knowledge of drywall repair


  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Demonstrated knowledge of painting, drywall repair, custodial methods, procedures, and safety principles.
  • Knowledge of basic building maintenance and labor activities.
  • Ability to operate basic labor supporting equipment, basic power tools, and demonstrated ability to operate commercial custodial equipment.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills necessary to interact with Trade Specialist, supervisors and colleagues while providing assistants with assignments.
  • Ability to read and write in English and perform simple mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions and communicate instructions to others.
  • Ability to function as an assistant or helper to a Trade Specialist
  • Physical capability to perform duties of the position including long periods of standing and walking, bending, stooping and climbing, and lifting of heavy items weighing approximately 50-75 pounds.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring frequent and prolonged exposure to extreme variations in temperatures including outdoor weather conditions and exposure to dust, fumes, and chemicals.
  • Ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.
