Position Summary
We are excited to announce the opening of the Building and Environmental Services Technician position within the Department of Housing and Residence Life at Winston-Salem State University ( WSSU). This essential role ensures that our residential facilities provide a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors, supporting the overall mission of the university.
The Building and Environmental Services Technician will be responsible for performing a variety of routine and specialized cleaning tasks to ensure the proper upkeep and functionality of our campus housing facilities. This role plays a vital part in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of our residence halls, contributing directly to the student experience and success.
Primary Responsibilities:
General Maintenance and Cleaning :

  • Perform routine cleaning of common areas, hallways, restrooms, lobbies, and other shared spaces within residence halls and campus housing buildings.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, and dust various areas in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Clean and disinfect bathrooms, kitchens, and other high-traffic areas regularly to ensure a hygienic environment.
  • Ensure that all cleaning supplies and equipment are stocked and properly maintained.
  • Perform deep cleaning as needed during holiday breaks, before move-in/move-out periods, and during special events.


This position is crucial in helping to maintain the highest standards of cleanliness and functionality across the university's housing facilities. By providing a well-maintained environment, this role directly supports the overall well-being of our residential community and contributes to a positive living experience for our students.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in building maintenance, environmental services, or a similar role.

Describe the specific job duties related to this competency
Knowledge -Technical: Performs daily routine cleaning and resupply of assigned area on a timely basis. Performs basic cleaning such as sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, dusting, disinfecting, vacuuming, etc., to keep working areas in a clean and orderly condition. Fills dispensers, such as tissue and soap dispensers, with the proper product and amount. Clean restrooms (to include sweeping and mopping floors, commodes and urinals inside and out, sinks, mirrors and dispensers twice per day, once in the morning and after lunch). Scrub and clean showers, floors and, wash bathtubs. Empty trash cans daily; wash and change liners as needed. Check and refill all paper supplies as needed. Perform detail Cleaning of assigned area, high and low dusting, student common kitchen cleaning, glass/lobbies. Spot wash walls to remove graffiti. Dust all furniture to include underneath pillows and cushions in upholstered furniture. Dust all windowsills. Wash all glass surfaces. Polish stainless steel and other metal surfaces Wash outside of washing machines and dryers and laundry rooms, scrub sinks. Sweep, mop and dust stairwells, and banisters. Pick up paper, cans, bottles and other debris at least 25 feet outward from the buildings, twice daily (once in the morning and after lunch). Assist supervisor as a housekeeping team lead, monitor absences, tardies, serve as safety officer conducting daily, weekly and monthly inservices regarding safety. Ensure that work assignments of team are efficiently carried out. Conduct new employee orientations. Make recommendations for project work and communicate with supervisor to follow up those assignments. Correspond with university departments regarding cleaning.
