About the Opportunity

Located within the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, this position will serve as the Lane Innovation Hub (LIH) Service Center Lead Manufacturing Engineer and also assist with the operation of multiple Lane Innovation Hub facilities/equipment, including rapid prototyping equipment, welding equipment, advanced manufacturing lab, circuit board printing equipment, and a 3D metal printer facility.

What You'll Do

Lane Innovation Hub Service Center



  • Serve as the Lane Innovation Hub (LIH) Service Center Lead Manufacturing Engineer.
  • Develop technical manufacturing plans, production schedules, and manufacturing policies to ensure the timely and accurate completion for all active manufacturing requests in submitted to the Lane Innovation Hub Service center.
  • Manage logistics associated with the inflow, execution, and delivery of manufacturing requests submitted to the Lane Innovation Hub.
  • Work with the LIH Advanced Manufacturing Lab manager to ensure manufacturing schedules and equipment maintenance schedules mesh.
  • Monitor plan and adjust as needed to maximize facility availability and satisfy client work requests.
  • Serve as the LIH Service Center Lead Design Engineer.
  • Use technical engineering design skills to engineer mechanical designs to meet client specifications.
  • Preform engineering design tasks using computer aided drafting software i.e. Solidworks, AutoCAD Fusion 360. Adjusting CAD models from students, faculty, staff, and community members based on machine capabilities and tolerances. Review and make suggestions for modified final designs.
  • Program tool paths for CNC equipment using computer aided manufacturing (CAM) software based on provided engineering CAD models. Convert the CAM files to G-code and M-code to translate toolpath into language CNC equipment understands using the corresponding post processor.
  • Review all tool paths generated by users before running on a CNC equipment. Assist in necessary tool path adjustments in cutting feeds, speeds, and cut depths for the safety of the equipment. Provide feedback for any changes made to help teach users proper specifications.
  • Serve as Lead Quality Assurance Officer for LIH Service Center to ensure that completed work meets all client specifications including all Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) requirements.
  • Develop, review and issue quotes for manufacturing requests submitted to the Lane Innovation Hub.
  • Work with the LIH Advanced Manufacturing Lab manager and the LIH Safety Officer to develop and maintain standard operation procedures for all LIH Service Center equipment.
  • Develop, maintain, and instruct staff trainings to ensure the safe operations of equipment. Decide depth of training based on the hazardous nature of each piece of equipment and the corresponding task being performed. Assess trainings on a quarterly basis and revise as necessary.
  • Supervise staff on a variety of manufacturing equipment in hot works, manual machining, CNC machining, CNC cutting, metal forming, woodworking, and 3D printing used for Lane Innovation Hub work. Provide operational knowledge on specific process to assist prototyping activities and maintain the integrity of the equipment.
  • Manage timecard and scheduling of assigned LIH staff members.
  • Serve as an LIH Service Center fabricator by manufacturing designs submitted to the LIH Service Center.
  • Work with the LIH director and direct staff to foster and promote a welcoming, professional, and positive customer service focused environment within the Lane Innovation Hub.
  • Work with the LIH director to review and revise LIH Service Center equipment and labor rates each fiscal year.
  • Work with the Lane Innovation Hub director to ensure LIH Service Center expenses are properly accounted for.
  • Work with the LIH Director to ensure LIH Service Center client finances are properly set to ensure proper billing takes place.
  • Serve as resources to clients in the necessity of designing for manufacturing, the necessity for prototyping to iterate designs, and to explain the capabilities and limitations of the facility, equipment, and services within the Lane Innovation Hub.
  • Administer billing and inventory systems for Lane Innovation Hub facilities. Ensure proper rates are being applied to each activity, equipment usage is being recorded appropriately and accurately, and sufficient supply inventory is available to meet customer needs. Ensure that metrics for equipment usage, inventory, and staff usage are captured and used to guarantee that the needs of students, instructional courses, research, and external clients.
  • Work with the Engineering Technology (ETEC) Program Coordinator to help meet the needs of Lane Innovation Hub supported/hosted lab courses.
  • Supervise LIH student workers on tasks that need to be accomplished.


Lane Innovation Hub



  • Assist the operation of multiple Lane Innovation Hub facilities/equipment, including rapid prototyping equipment, welding equipment, advanced manufacturing lab, circuit board printing equipment, and a 3D metal printer facility. Maintain operating knowledge of all major equipment located in the Lane Innovation Hub.
  • Work with Statler College Safety Officer to create and document user training requirements and lab safety protocols for Lane Innovation Hub facilities.
  • Serve as a professional reviewer and approver of LIH developed standard operating procedures.
  • Serve as a resource for other maker spaces and innovation initiatives on campus. Work with students, faculty, staff, and community to support development and operations of Lane Innovation Hub programs. Work with college K-12 outreach staff to develop STEM learning activities.
  • Assist in the development, maintenance, and instruction of trainings with Lane Innovation Hub users to ensure the safe operations of the equipment.
  • Oversee trained and qualified facilities users to ensure the safety of the user, occupants, and equipment. Provide guidance and oversight when necessary and guarantee that procedures and protocols are upheld. Take the necessary action to safeguard users, employees, and facilities within Innovation Hub guidelines.
  • Assist engineering courses, student projects, and other users in engineering design tasks using computer aided drafting software i.e. AutoCAD Fusion 360 and Solidworks. Make suggestions and provide feedback on design changes to users based on machine capabilities. Perform modifications if necessary to achieve completion.
  • Generate tool paths for various pieces of CNC equipment using computer aided manufacturing (CAM) software using engineering CAD models from engineering courses, student projects, and other users. Select the proper post processor in the CAM software to produce G-code and M-Code to be transferred to the CNC machine.
  • Assist and review tool paths generated by students, faculty and other users to ensure the safety of the equipment and the user. Adjust cutting feeds, speeds, and cut depths for proper operations of equipment to produce a quality, final part.
  • Assist with other functions and tasks in the Lane Innovation Hub as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience involving:

    • Engineering Design using different types of Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) Software.
    • Experience in setup, maintenance, and operations of machining and fabrication equipment.
    • Reading and understanding blueprints and part drawings.
    • Working in a customer service-oriented environment.
    • Welding experience.


  • A minimum of six (6) months of experience with programming industrial CNC equipment using Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) Software.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

  • Ability to learn institutional requirements for the protection of intellectual property, technology transfer, and export control.
  • Ability to learn specific institutional or college policies and procedures.
  • Ability to teach procedures and principles of machining and fabrication.
  • Demonstrates an ability to utilize quality control and reverse engineering techniques to support operations.
  • Demonstrates an ability to operate a multitude of software's required to operate varying degrees of machines and systems.
  • Knowledge of hot works operations and welding principles and the ability to teach and manufacture with said abilities.
