The Position

A Postdoctoral fellow position is available for a highly motivated and independent candidate to join the laboratory of Dr. Ishan Deshpande in the Department of Physiological Chemistry at Genentech. The Deshpande lab aims to answer fundamental mechanistic questions in cell death and inflammation using state-of-the-art protein science. Projects include identification and mechanistic characterization of membrane protein complexes that mediate inflammatory signaling by using a confluence of structural, biochemical, cell biological and computational tools. The candidate is expected to work independently and collaborate effectively, both within Genentech and academia. The candidate is expected to publish their work in top-tier journals and present at external conferences.

The Opportunity:

  • The Department of Physiological Chemistry has long-standing expertise in cell death and inflammation. As a member of the department, you will join a group of highly talented postdoctoral fellows to make fundamental discoveries in biology critical to human health and disease.

  • Close collaboration with the cutting-edge cryo-EM facility at Genentech will enable access to state-of-the-art cryo-EM resources.

  • You will be part of the Genentech post-doctoral training program that provides an outstanding environment and the opportunity to pursue fundamental basic science questions in an environment focused on breakthrough discoveries.

Who You Are:

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry, structural biology, biophysics or a related field.

  • A strong publication track record with at least one first-author publication in a leading peer-reviewed journal.

  • Extensive hands-on experience in protein biochemistry and expertise in cryo-EM.

  • Independent and driven to perform at a high level in a collaborative and fast-paced environment.

  • Team player with a fearless attitude to tackle complex scientific problems with curiosity and creativity.

Preferred:

  • Hands-on experience with membrane protein purification is strongly desired.

  • Experience with mammalian cell culture is preferred.

  • Experience with or strong interest in learning computational structural biology approaches or cryo-ET is a plus.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco California is $98,000 to $104,500. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
