Clinical Excellence/Patient Care

* Assesses the needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care.

* Develops an individual plan of care using a collaborative approach with the patient/family and health care team.

* Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient's care.

* Delivers high quality care utilizing the nursing process while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required on assigned unit in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards of care.

* Utilizes holistic approach (considering biopsychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients and families served in the assigned service area.

* Delegates and provides direction for other healthcare providers and holds them accountable for their involvement in the plan of care.

* Utilizes critical thinking in making independent judgments and maintains responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients.

* Complete competency evaluations for nursing/circulator, supply, monitoring, and scrub roles.

* Demonstrates and maintains proficiency in the manual skills and techniques required in the administration of emergency medications used in the cardiovascular procedure lab including under the direct supervision of the physician.

* Demonstrates and maintains proficiency in the manual skills and techniques required to operate specialized equipment in the cardiovascular procedure labs.

* Demonstrates and maintains proficiency in maintaining a clean environment and sterile procedure field.

* Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of radiation safety and practice including, but not limited to the following:

o Knowledge of advanced imaging systems used in the Cath Lab setting

o Use of radiation protection devices and exposure levels for both the team member and patients.

* Continues professional development and involvement in professional activities that enhance nursing practice by sharing knowledge through networking and research.

* Assess and choose teaching strategies appropriate to the patient's and their families' age specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.

* Consults appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education.

* Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.

* Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.

* Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Appendix - Cardiovascular Procedural Lab Specific Education:

* Specific cardiovascular procedures performed in each market will likely vary; education and training will be provided based upon procedure scope.

* Procedure scope and knowledge / education may include the following but not limited to:

* Demonstration and knowledge of procedural details of a coronary angiogram, left heart catheterization, and right heart catheterization for both diagnostic and interventional procedures

o Coronary interventional equipment: balloons, stents, lithotripsy, rotational and pulse wave atherectomy, thrombectomy, laser

o Perfusion equipment: intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), Left Ventricular Cardiac support devices, temporary pacemaker, ECMO

* Knowledge of electrophysiology (EP) procedures including but not limited to Pacemakers/ICD, and ablation procedures.

* Knowledge of Structural Heart Procedures: TAVR, EVAR, LAAO, Mitral Clip, PFO/ASD Closure

* Knowledge of peripheral angiogram/interventions and interventional radiology procedures

* Point of care testing: activated clotting times (ACT), ABGs, right heart cath measurements, glucose, and pregnancy testing

* Advanced hemodynamic monitoring systems

* Sheath management - both arterial and venous sites according to hospital policy and procedure

* Aseptic technique

* Cardiac medication administration: appropriate understanding of mixing of cardiac medications and administration upon physician order, including intravenous, intraarterial, and intracoronary

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Preferred or Specialized

Not required to perform the essential functions of the position.

Education:

Diploma from an accredited nursing program.

BSN degree

Experience:

Two (2) year cardiovascular procedure experience.

Two (2) year conscious sedation experience.

Complex cardiovascular procedure experience which could include, electrophysiology (EP), peripheral vascular and/or structural heart procedures.

License(s)/Certification(s):

Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse.

Dual licensure is required for this position:

1. Licensure in the state of Illinois.

2. Licensure in a Compact State to enable practice in Iowa and Wisconsin.

New hires who are not dual licensed will have 90 days from date of hire to obtain and submit proof of dual licensure. (Proof of application for dual licensure is acceptable within the 90-day window if licensure processing has not been completed at the state level).

Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Must have previous procedural sedation experience and take a Conscious sedation class (UnityPoint procedural sedation class) and pass a competency test with 84% accuracy as required by the affiliates policy. This competency test needs to be done every two years to verify competency.

Must have Cardiac Basic Rhythm interpretation skills and be able to pass a competency.

Valid drivers' license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
